"Survivors"

Chapter 3

Pushing open the door to room 221 of the Best Western just off I-95, Kevin tossed his bag on the far side of the bed and then followed it with his exhausted body. Damn, he was tired. Physically ... emotionally ... you name it, it was tired.

Just before sleep overcame him he had the presence of mind to dig for his cell phone. Calling up the memory function, he dialed Morgan's number. Damn, she must have been sitting right on top of it.

"Kevin?"

"Baby, when did you get caller i.d.?" he grinned.

"I knew it would be you, where are you?"

"Best Western, exit .... damn, I don't what exit, but it's right down the road from the hospital."

"I'll be right there and we can -"

"Morgan, calm down. Look, I need to pull myself together. Give me a couple of hours to get some sleep and a shower first."

She sighed audibly. "All right. But you need to see her."

Silence.

"Kev?"

"I already have."

"What? How did she react? Kevin, she doesn't know I called you!"

"It's ok, she didn't see *me*." He paused.

"But--??"

"Jimmy was there."

"Oh God, Kevin, you didn't--"

"What, Morgan, kill the bastard? Shove his privates so far up his --" He broke off. "No, I didn't let *him* see me, either. But I heard what he said to her."

"Don't make me drag this out of you," she threatened.

"From what I could hear, he's leaving her. "To *work things out* he said. Sounded like he was leaving for good. I hope like hell that's true." The bitterness in his voice was thick.

Softly Morgan said, "Kevin, she loves him."

"She'll get over him. He doesn't deserve a woman like her."

"Because--??"

"Because she has *me* now."
