"Survivors"
Chapter 13
He bent his forehead to hers, his eyes closed tightly against the power of her confession.
"Wow," was his reverently quiet reply.
"Wow*?" she replied with a soft
laugh. "I make a life-altering true confession and all
you can say is *wow*?"
"Why did it take us so long?"
Rolling to the side, he gathered her close, tucking her head under his chin.
"It's kinda hard to fall in love
with someone who calls you *squidbait*." She shook with
suppressed laughter.
"But I meant it in the best possible way," he
laughed.
"I've always loved you, Kevin, I just wasn't *in* love with
you. I always thought you were so ... untouchable. You were bound for greater
things than I could offer you."
"God Chris, what could be better than this? This is real
life. *This* is what I need, not some tour bus filled with glitzy costumes and
yet another meal out of a cardboard box."
The thunder crashed as a bolt of lightning hit just a
little too close to the
house, and Chrissy and Kevin both jumped.
"Remember that summer we built the
tree house in your back yard?" she asked. "I'll never forget that day we got
caught up there in a summer storm. I don't think I'd ever seen you mom
that worried about you before."
"She
felt helpless, like she couldn't do anything to protect us." He held her
tighter. "You were so scared. I told you I'd keep you safe, and I meant it."
"And you *did*, everything was
fine."
"What about now, Chris?"
he asked, anguish in his voice. "I feel so damn helpless. I can't save you this time and it's killing
me."
"Kev-"
"I
mean it, Chrissy. I can talk to you, I can hold your hand, I can pray for you, but I can't cure you. I don't want to lose you
Chris."
Leaning back to look in his eyes,
she brushed a stray tear from his face and kissed his mouth, her decision made.
"In the morning I want you to take me home. Take me back to Daytona, Kevin. I have a surgery to
schedule."
