Yet again, he was thinking about her, and regretting what he had done with every ounce of his soul. He knew he had lost her. She hadn’t said a single word to him since she stepped out of his hotel room that morning. At first he thought it was just so things wouldn’t seem suspicious to everyone else, but soon he realized she was avoiding him. It was his fault. He shouldn’t have told her he would accept any answer she gave him. Still, he couldn’t not say that, because he knew he couldn’t expect anything of that night. As usual, he should have just left well enough alone. She told him she was happy with Brad, and he should have just left it at that. But he couldn’t. He was in love with her, even more than he had been when they were together.
The phone rang, and he picked it up. “Hello?” he said glumly.
“Hey, Frack. Is something wrong?” It was Brian.
“No, I’m fine. I was just…never mind. Nothing is wrong. So what’s up?”
“Nothing much. I was just calling to say hey and see how the guys were and stuff. You’re the only person I’ve talked to since we left.”
“Oh! Well, Howie is dating a new girl, some model. Kevin and Kristin are pretty good. AJ bleached his hair again. And me, well, I’m me. I’m doing okay. How’s Paris?”
“Paris is gorgeous. Leighanne says hi. We’re having a great time.” He paused. “I take it she hasn’t called.”
Nick had to smile at how well Brian knew him. “No, she hasn’t. I didn’t really expect her to, but it’s still kind of a let down.”
“I’m sorry, Frack. You’ll find someone else.”
He was just about to say, “I don’t want someone else,” when simultaneously, a loud crash of thunder startled him, the phone went dead, and the doorbell rang. Shrugging, he hung up the phone. Brian would call him back sooner or later. He went to the door and gasped.
Standing on the doorstep was Madeleine, soaked and shivering, suitcases in hand. Without a word, she dropped her bags and threw her arms around him.
