Brian groaned. “Do you have a better idea? He’s the only one free. Besides, it’ll give her a chance to realize how much she still loves him and how they should go out again.”
She hesitated. “Look, this really isn’t my business to tell you. I was gonna wait for her to get here and she could tell you, but you need to know. She has a new boyfriend. She met him two months ago. She isn’t gonna get back together with Nick. She’s absolutely crazy about this Brad guy.”
“Good, then. Nick has been dating, too, so then they’re obviously over each other, and there will be no problem with him picking her up.”
“Brian, if you were either of them, how would you feel in that situation? Whether they’re over each other or not, it’s gonna be uncomfortable.”
He sighed. “I guess you’re right, but I honestly can’t think of a better way to do this. I don’t want her coming here in a taxi because, well, you know how much I worry about her. The only person who’s not busy when her plane is coming in is Nick.”
His fiancée finally gave in. “Fine, I guess that’ll have to work, but I bet neither one of them is gonna like it all that much.”
Just then, the phone rang. He picked it up. It was Madeleine. “Hey, Brian. I have a question for you.”
“Yeah?”
“I have a new boyfriend, if Leighanne hasn’t told you.”
“Yeah, she told me. His name is Brad, right?”
“Yep. Well, I was wondering if I could bring him along this weekend. We could stay at a hotel and he’ll pay for his own ticket, but he doesn’t have anything to do this weekend, and it’s gonna be our one-month anniversary.”
“No problem. You do know that-”
“I know that Nick is gonna be there, but doesn’t he have a new girlfriend by now?”
“He dates a lot.”
“Okay, so he shouldn’t have a problem with it. Can you call and make reservations for a hotel?”
“You guys don’t have to stay at a hotel. You can stay here. You can have the king bed guestroom.”
“Thanks, Brian. I felt really bad leaving him here when he knows Nick is gonna be there and he knows the history with me and Nick.”
“No problem, Mattie. I love you, and I can’t wait until you come visit.” He hung up and turned to Leighanne. “Scratch the Nick idea.”
“What?”
“She’s bringing Brad with her.”
“Oh, man. Nick can’t pick her up then. I’ll see if I can get out of filming on Friday.”
