“Leave me alone! I’m busy!” she replied.
“Busy doing what? Sulking? Please come out, Mattie,” Amy pleaded.
This time, Madeleine didn’t even answer.
She didn’t know how much time had passed since Amy and Krysten visited, nor did she care. A scratching sort of noise was coming from the direction of the door, and the doorknob was rattling. No one could get in, though. She had locked herself in. Suddenly, she heard a “Yes!” and the doorknob stopped rattling and twisted to open the door.
She looked up from her tear-soaked pillow to see Brian with a bobby pin in his hand. “What the hell are you doing here? I thought you were mad at me,” she sneered.
“I may be mad at you, but I’m not gonna leave you all alone like this. Will you at least come out of this room? You haven’t left it since we got here,” he stated.
“I know I haven’t, and I don’t intend to until we have to leave for the venue tomorrow.” She paused. “You, on the other hand, are quite welcome to leave the room because I don’t feel like talking to anyone right now.”
He ignored her snippy remark. “Why didn’t you just tell Mom and Dad? It would have avoided two arguments, and Mom and Dad wouldn’t be any more pissed off than they are now.”
“You know, you have this way of making me feel worse about things I already feel bad about. I know I should have just told them, but it’s too late now!” She paused. “I don’t even care about Mom and Dad anymore. I just want Nick.”
“What good is it gonna do to sit here and cry about it, Mattie? You may as well at least leave the room,” Brian begged.
“You’re annoying me. Will you please leave me to my moping?”
“Fine, I give up.” He closed the door behind him as he left.
