Why was she even leaving him? She loved him, or she had thought so a few hours ago. She had been right; this whole assignment was a bad idea. All of a sudden, Nick had stepped into what she thought had been the perfect life. Before him, she had thought she was happy. Now she was risking losing whom she had thought was the love of her life. Nick had turned her entire world upside down. And now she was pregnant with his kid. Huh, that would be a good reason as to why she was leaving Joel, she supposed. It was kind of hard to hold a relationship when you were pregnant with another guy’s kid! A knock on the door pulled her from her thoughts.
She opened the door of her room to come face-to-face with a not very happy looking Nick. “Hey, are you all right?” she asked.
“I’m incredibly confused. I’m such an idiot! What am I gonna do?” he rambled.
“Whoa, slow down. Why don’t you start by telling me what’s going on?” she suggested, pulling him inside and closing the door.
“She’s pregnant, too, Liz. Andrea’s pregnant.”
“What?”
“I can’t leave a pregnant girl,” he stated.
“She’s pregnant?”
“Yeah, she’s pregnant. I don’t wanna leave her now. I mean, she’s – “
“Wait a second. I’m not understanding this,” Liz interrupted. “Can you run the part about what happens to me by me one more time?”
“I don’t know.”
“Okay, so let me get this straight. You can’t leave her, but you can leave me.”
“Please realize that I don’t want to leave you. Please understand. I’m just more obligated to stay with Andrea.”
“Wh-uh-how? How is what you did with her any different than what you did with me? It’s the same procedure, Nick!”
“Yeah, but she’s my girlfriend.”
“Wait, this situation sounds a little familiar. Wasn’t it a just a month ago that you were trying to make me understand why you couldn’t associate with me on a personal level?”
“This is a totally different situation.”
“No, it’s really not. Again, you have to make a decision between me and her, and you’re choosing her. I understand.”
“I never said I chose her.”
“Fine then, who do you choose?”
He remained silent for several seconds, causing Liz to burst into tears.
“Just leave. Go on, go back to your girlfriend. I’m sure she needs you right now.” She pushed him out and tried to close the door, but he held it open.
“Liz, wait!” he exclaimed.
She gave the door a strong shove and managed to close and lock it before sliding to the floor, sobbing.
