Chapter 5

The next day, Nick bounded into the hospital with a bouquet of flowers. If this didn’t win Heather over, he was in for a tough couple of weeks until she was discharged. When he reached the sixth floor, he stepped off the elevator and walked confidently into her room. She looked up at him. “It’s you again,” she muttered. “Why are you here? Didn’t you cause me enough pain?”

Nick ignored her comment and handed her the brightly colored bouquet. “I brought you flowers.”

“Gee, that makes me feel a lot better,” she grumbled sarcastically. “You put me in the hospital and murdered my best friend, but flowers makes up for it.”

“Look, Heather. I already apologized. If there were anything I could do to exchange places with you, I would, but I can’t.”

She didn’t say anything, but she turned away from him, and that said more than words.

“You have no idea how sorry I am.”

Suddenly, tears began to stream down Heather’s tan cheeks. “I don’t need to hear any more sorries! Dammit! Sorry isn’t going to do shit, Nick! Sorry isn’t going to stop the pain. Sorry isn’t going to get me out of the fucking hospital. Sorry isn’t going to bring my best friend back, just like it didn’t bring my parents back two years ago,” she spat. When she realized what was said in her last line, her hand flew to her mouth. “I didn’t mean to say that much.”

He stood up and walked to the door. “I think I’ll just go,” he mumbled numbly. Still, he wasn’t going to give up. She may have won the battle, but she hadn’t won the war.
