Chapter 1

Nick attempted to smile at the bartender as he paid for a third wine cooler for his girlfriend. “This is it, Sara. No more,” he said seriously. Sara didn’t pay any attention to him, but instead downed the drink and began to laugh. “Come on. We’re leaving,” he said as calmly as he could.

“But Nicky, I’m having fun!” she giggled. She tossed her straightened blonde hair over her shoulder and flashed him a perfect smile. Even when she was both sick and tipsy, she was beautiful. After all, she was a model.

“You won’t be having so much fun in the morning. I need to get you home, sweetie!” he insisted.

“Oh, all right,” Sara grumbled. She grabbed her purse and let him lead her to the door. “Are you sure we have to go?”

“I’m positive. Give me the keys, please,” he requested. He held out his hand for them when they reached her black Jaguar. “I can’t let you drive in this condition, Sara.”

“No, I don’t want you to drive my car! You’re going to mess it up!” she protested. “I’ll be fine. I can drive. I promise.”

“Sara, I don’t want you to get hurt. I don’t think you’re sober enough to drive, and with the way you’ve been feeling lately…” he trailed off.

“I can do it. I drove when I was a lot worse than this, you know,” she argued.

Knowing it was no use to protest anymore, Nick sighed and got in the passenger side. It was true. She had driven when she was in a much worse condition. She would be fine, he assured himself. As Sara started the car, he fastened his seatbelt, not realizing that she hadn’t fastened hers.

They were driving on the deserted road that led to her mansion, and Nick realized this wasn’t so bad. It wasn’t like anyone ever drove on this road anyway. At least, that’s what he thought. He began to doze off when a sudden wave of nausea hit Sara, and the car lost control. That was when he saw the headlights of the other car and heard the screeching tires. Then he blacked out.
