Chapter 27

It was the last day of the tour, and they were in Orlando. Everyone was in a nervous hustle to get ready, especially Nick. “Brian, have you seen my hair gel?” he said. “I have to look good, and mousse just isn’t working.”

“Yeah, I borrowed it,” Brian replied, handing him the bottle. “You’re excited, aren’t you?”

“Uh, yeah, but really nervous, too. What if she doesn’t like it?” Nick murmured.

“She will. Trust me,” Brian assured him. In truth, he wasn’t quite sure, but what kind of a girl wouldn’t like what they had planned?

The concert went by without a hitch, and then it was time for Nick’s surprise. As the music for “Back to Your Heart” began to play, he was the first to step on stage, besides Kevin, who was playing piano. This was it, now or never.

Christine watched from backstage, her heart aching as Nick cleared his throat. “I would like to tell all of you about something. I did something really dumb the other day. I hurt someone that I love more than anything in the world,” he announced to thousands of screaming girls. Who is he talking about? Christine thought, oblivious to the fact that it was she. “She’s someone very special to me, and I lost her. I want to dedicate this song to her. I love you, angel, and I’m sorry.” Sighs of joy, romance, and disappointment erupted from the crowd.

Tears of happiness flooded her cheeks as Christine realized what was going on. “Oh my God,” she whispered. “He did that for me?” She backed up against the wall and slid to the floor, her heart fluttering.

All the memories they had shared suddenly came flooding back to her in one swift moment.

“I’m only here because Fatima sent me to come get you.”

“I don’t see why they couldn’t have just sent her home with you, Brian.”

“Well, that totally wasn’t my fault, either. Oh my God! Like, whatever! Someone has PMS today, huh?”

“Samantha. She broke it off.”

“Brian tried to kiss me.”

“You should hang out with the guys today!”

“Maybe we should take my car and they can take Brian’s. Then they have some ‘alone time.’”

“Nicky, we have to dance (hiccup) to this. This is (hiccup) you!”

“Please, Nick. We can’t have done anything.”

“I-I am in love with you.”

“You’re so pretty. You look just like an angel.”

“No one has ever called me beautiful before.”

“God, angel, what has that bastard done to you?”

“We got the results back. They’re positive.”

“They’ll never forgive me!” “Maybe you should have thought of that before we had sex.”

“You’re a melodramatic little slut.”

“I kissed him. This is my fault.”

“You deserved everything you got from Jeff.”

“Don’t you get it? I don’t care about Brian like that! I just wanted to get back at you for everything you said to me in the car!"

“God, can you drop it? I’m an idiot, I’m a slut, I’m a bitch. Whatever you want me to be, Nick. It doesn’t matter, it’s done, I did it, and as much as I regret it, there’s nothing I can do about it.”

“I used to be in love with you. You’re pregnant with my child!” “True, but that doesn’t mean you have to like me now. You’ve made it clear that you don’t want to be around me.”

“Was that someone else that kissed me?” “That was a mistake.”

“I can’t believe she would get an abortion without telling me!”

“I’m over him, Sam! I don’t love him anymore!”

“Nick, this is my ex-boyfriend and one of the nicest guys I know, Andrew. Andrew, meet Nick, another of my ex-boyfriends.”

“What was all that with Andrew? Were you trying to hurt me?”

“Nick, this isn’t going to be like the elevator, is it? If it is, then don’t bother. I don’t need you to play any more games with my emotions.” “This is right. This isn’t a mistake.”

“You’re going to say it was a mistake, aren’t you?”

“I wish you could just forgive me, but obviously, you can’t, so I’m going to Sandra’s room. Goodbye, Nick. You just wasted your last chance to get me back.”

“Nick, please tell me you used protection.”

“Let’s get back together. I still love you.” “No. I told you before that you wasted your last chance. I’m not going to let anything happen between us anymore, Nick, because you’re just going to tell me it’s just a mistake. A fucking mistake.”

“Chris, I want things to go back to the way they used to be.”

“Don’t get my hopes up, because you’ll just make them fall all over again.”

Before she knew it, the music had stopped, and she felt a hand on her shoulder. Nick stood behind her with a single red rose and a tear rolling down his cheek. “Please, Chris. I’m so sorry. Take me back?”

Christine was speechless for several moments as Nick waited in endless suspense. Finally, she found her voice. “Oh my God, Nick. How could I not? I love you,” she whispered, falling into his arms.

“I love you, too, angel,” he murmured back. “This is so right. You’re perfect.”

“Mmm…I’m your perfect mistake,” Christine whispered against his warm, soft lips. He stroked her auburn hair and held her tight. She was his perfect mistake.
