“That’s okay, guys. I’ll just wait for the next one,” Nick said kindly. The door closed, and he pressed the button to go up as Christine stepped up beside him. They hadn’t talked since their argument on the bus after the first show.
“Hi,” Christine said awkwardly.
“Hey. Good job tonight,” Nick said.
“Thanks. You, too,” Christine replied. The elevator stopped on their floor, and they boarded it. It was empty as it began its ascent. Its passengers remained silent until it stopped.
Relieved, Christine stood in front of the door, but it didn’t open. “Oh, that’s just great,” she muttered as she realized that it was between the third and the fourth floor.
“We’re stuck,” Nick groaned. “This is unbelievable!”
“Well, what do we do?”
“Uh, I guess we pick up this emergency phone,” Nick said uncertainly. He grabbed the red phone in the corner and it immediately started ringing. “Uh, yeah. Hi. I’m Nick Carter. One of our dancers and I are stuck on the elevator between the third and fourth floor. Okay, thanks, bye.” He hung up the phone. “They said they’ll do what they can, and it may take a little while. Might as well make yourself comfortable.”
“Wonderful. I’m stuck on an elevator for a while with you, and you can’t stand to be in the same room with me.”
“That’s not true,” Nick protested.
“Nick, don’t even bother. You can’t stand me after what I did to you, and to be honest, I don’t blame you.”
“I can, too, stand you. I used to be in love with you. You’re pregnant with my child!”
“True, but that doesn’t mean you have to like me now. You’ve made it clear that you don’t want to be around me.” A tear slid down her cheek, but she ignored it and hoped Nick didn’t notice.
Nick opened his mouth to say something, but couldn’t think of anything to say. Instead, he pushed her up against the wall and kissed her passionately. When they finally pulled apart, Nick tenderly brushed the tear away. There was an uncomfortable silence for several seconds. Just then, the elevator began to move again, and they reached their floor and stepped off. “Uh, um, good night,” Nick mumbled.
“Bye,” Christine replied. She slipped into her room, full of hope once again.
