Nick tried to cheer everyone up. “Come on, guys, we’ll see Katelyn in a couple months!”
“Yeah, but it’s no fun up until then,” Christine complained. “What am I going to do without someone to giggle with all the time?”
“Yeah, and I won’t have anyone to make out with…I mean…HANG out with all the time,” Brian joked. He smiled slightly, but he didn’t look very happy.
“Brian, you can get along without me for a few months. You know I’ll call you all the time,” Katelyn said.
“I don’t see how we got along with you for a few days,” Christine teased.
“That’s the spirit, Chris!” Nick exclaimed jokingly.
A loud, robotic voice came over the loudspeaker. “Flight 1283 to Madison at gate A6 is now boarding!”
Katelyn looked first at Nick. “Well, Nick, thank you so much. I had a great time partying down here with you guys, even though it was so short.” She gave him a hug and moved on to Brian. “You’ll do fine without me, as long as you call a lot,” she said. He gave her a hug and a kiss before she turned to Christine. “Teeny, you know I’ll talk to you every day, so you don’t need to worry.”
“Bye, Kat,” Christine said. She gave her friend a hug and an encouraging smile. “I’ll see you in September!”
“Bye!” called the guys as she boarded the plane.
“I’m going to miss that girl. Your best friend is amazing, Chrissie,” Brian said softly.
“Hey, I can say the same about yours, Brian,” Christine replied. “And you’ll see her soon enough. Don’t worry!”
When they returned to the hotel, Sandra was waiting. Since the wedding she was in was nearby, she had just driven there and back. Christine slipped into her room and prepared to explain everything that had happened while Sandra was gone.
“Hey, Chris!” Sandra exclaimed happily. Sure enough, the question Christine was expecting came first out of Sandra’s mouth. “What did I miss?”
“Oh, my. You have missed a lot, girl. Nick decided I needed a surprise visit from Kate, so she showed up on Sunday.”
“So I heard. Go on.”
“So Brian met her and immediately started to crush on her. We all went clubbing on Tuesday night, and Brian and Kate ended up getting together officially. They left to go to some other club, and I got really drunk and asked Nick to dance to ‘I’ll Never Break Your Heart.’ He said he would, but only if I slowed down on the alcohol.” She paused, debating whether or not to tell Sandra everything. Sandra seemed to sense her discomfort.
“I won’t tell anyone,” she promised.
Sighing, Christine decided to share her secret with Sandra. “Here’s where things get blurry. I don’t remember any of this part. I guess Nick kissed me, then I kissed him, then we came back here and things got really…out of hand.”
“Did you-”
“Yeah, we did. I woke up yesterday and could not remember a thing. I turned over and saw Nick lying next to me, and I freaked out and started crying, and I cried even harder when I found out we didn’t use protection. To make a long story short, Nick told me he was in love with me, and we officially got together.”
“Gosh, it’s about time! We were all waiting for it to happen.”
“So now I might be pregnant. I don’t know. I hope not. Well, then Nick and Brian and Katelyn and I spent yesterday together. That’s pretty much it.”
“Do you think you are?”
“Are what?”
“Pregnant.”
“I don’t know. I might be. We didn’t use anything and I’m not on birth control. If I am, my parents will never speak to me again, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.” Christine looked away as tears clouded her vision.
“Aw, Chris, they’ll understand. They were young once. Besides, if you’re really in love with Nick-”
“That’s another thing. I am really in love with Nick, and if he got me pregnant, they won’t like him, so even if they speak to me after they find out I’m pregnant, they won’t speak to me if they don’t approve of my boyfriend.”
“Well, why don’t we take this one step at a time? You don’t know if you’re pregnant yet. If you’re late or if you get morning sickness and Nick won’t take you to the doctor, I will.”
Christine smiled appreciatively. “Thanks.”
“No problem,” Sandra replied.
