Chapter 10

“I’m getting this,” Leighanne stated, picking up a blue sweater off the rack. She looked over at Beth. “So is that really how you and Nick met? My idiot boyfriend almost hit you with a basketball?”

“Yeah, that’s what happened. I was taking a walk in Ruskin. Actually, I’m not sure if it was your idiot boyfriend or MY idiot boyfriend, but either way, it scared the crap out of me. I wasn’t exactly expecting it. Anyway, then I realized I was in a park and I was completely lost. Brian had to go because he had dinner reservations with you. Nick offered to walk me back home. It turned out he lives two doors down from me, so that was cool,” Beth answered. She picked up a low-cut v-neck lilac shirt from a table and held it up against her body. “What do you think?”

“I think that would look adorable on you and you should try it on. Ooh, and I bet Nick would love it,” Kristin said. “Anyway, did you know who he was right away?”

“Nope, I didn’t have a clue. He had to tell me, and he did that last night. I was just about to go buy their CD the other day, but I didn’t know where to go. If I would have, then I probably would have recognized him because I always check out the CD jackets.”

“Well, that’s cool that you didn’t know, because he wasn’t in his Backstreet Boy form when he you were getting to know him, then,” Kristin stated matter-of-factly. She grabbed a pair of light blue flare jeans and held them up to get opinions. Her two friends nodded approvingly.

“Wait, I’m confused. Is he bad when he’s in Backstreet Boy form?” Beth asked.

“No, he’s the same guy, but it’s really hard to get to know a guy when you know he has a song on the radio that you hear all the time. You get all self conscious. I know from experience with Brian. It’s very hard to be yourself around someone famous, and that’s obviously important in getting to know each other,” Leighanne stated. “Besides, Backstreet Boy Nick is a heart throb. It’s kind of difficult to act normal on a date with someone you know is known as a heart throb.”

“It’s weird dating a Backstreet Boy,” Kristin added. “One minute they’re all into the personal time with you, and the next, they have to go out in public and pretend you’re not even there. You know they care about you, but it’s hard to remember that sometimes.”

“Pretend you’re not there?” Beth repeated, confused.

“Their management doesn’t want the public to know they have girlfriends because it takes away a lot of their sex appeal,” Kristin explained. “It’s not easy for us to deal with, but it’s part of the package.”

“Nick didn’t mention anything about that to me, but I guess I’m okay with it, as long as he doesn’t cheat on me,” Beth stated.

“Oh, he won’t. From everything I know about him, he is the most faithful guy in the world,” Kristin assured her.

“Good. He knows too much about me now for me to be able to handle him hurting me. We talked a lot last night, and I told him a lot of really personal things.”

“He’s a sweetie. He wouldn’t do that,” Leighanne said.
