Chapter 9

Nervously, Nick dialed the number of the guy who used to be his best friend. However, after the Backstreet Boys had broken up, the two gradually stopped talking. Actually, it was mostly Nick’s drinking that messed up their friendship. Nick’s drinking had screwed up the band, too. Gosh, what hadn’t he destroyed?

Finally, after three rings, Brian picked up the phone. “What’s up? This is Brian.”

“Uh, hey, Brian, it’s Nick,” Nick replied uncomfortably.

“Nick? Brian repeated in disbelief. “I haven’t talked to you in a year and a half!”

“Not since I started drinking,” Nick mumbled. “But I’m all done with that. My life is all straightened out,” he added firmly.

“That’s great! So what’s up?” Brian exclaimed.

“A lot,” Nick started. Before he could go into any detail, Brian had a suggestion.

“Wanna meet somewhere for lunch? We can catch up then.”

“Sure. Is Harry’s okay?” Nick said, referring to the place they used to eat at every day when they were recording.

“Great. I’ll meet you there in half an hour.”
