Chapter 4

Nick took a deep breath and pounded on Lauren’s apartment door. It was three weeks after Lauren had been in the hospital. He had recognized the building from the news and begged the landlord to tell her what apartment Lauren was in.

Lauren opened the door holding a little boy of maybe two or three, with soft blonde hair and the ocean blue eyes she and Nick shared. He was very cute, and he reminded Nick of his own baby pictures. That had been exactly what he looked like. Lauren spoke up. “What are you doing here?”

“It’s nice to see you, too. Who is this?” Nick asked, sharing the curiosity the boy obviously had about him. They studied each other intently until Lauren put the boy down.

“Danny, go play with Jess, okay?” Lauren said.

“Okay, Mommy,” the child replied as he ran off.

Nick’s heart sank. He was too late. She was already with someone. “He just called you Mommy.”

“Yes, he did. I’m his mother. That’s my son. Isn’t he beautiful?” Lauren stepped into the hall and closed the door as her eyes clouded with tears. She knew this day would come sooner or later, and she had always been prepared. Why was she so nervous?

“Who’s the father?” Nick asked.

She sighed. “You are.”
