Just as a commercial came on, the phone rang. Thinking it was her, he picked up immediately. “Lauren, where are you?”
“Is this Nickolas Carter?” said the robotic voice on the other end. It wasn’t Lauren’s.
“Yes, it is. Who is this?”
“This is Doctor Michaels from Tampa General.”
“Tampa General? What’s going on? Is something wrong?” Nick asked frantically.
“Mr. Carter, your girlfriend, Lauren, was involved in a serious car accident this afternoon,” the doctor replied. Nick was so flustered that he didn’t even notice the man’s mistake in calling Lauren his girlfriend. “I think it would be best if you could get here as soon as possible.”
“Yes, doctor. Okay, thanks,” Nick hung up, tears already flooding his face. He couldn’t lose her now, not when he had finally found her again. He tied his shoes and ran to the Durango.
