Chapter 6

“Lauren, Lauren, wake up!” Jessica whispered. Her sister showed no sign of waking. “Lauren!” she said a little louder, and still nothing. “Lauren, wake up!” Jessica murmured. Finally, she got annoyed. “Lauren!” she shouted.

Instantly, Lauren jumped up. “What? What’s wrong? What’s going on?” she exclaimed.

“Nothing. You just wouldn’t wake up and it was getting on my nerves,” Jessica replied. “Anyway, it’s past noon. Nick and I are going to lunch and then we’re gonna pick up some food. Do you want to come?”

“No, but I’ll have his head if he touches you,” Lauren hissed. “Does he have a cell phone where I can reach you if something happens?”

“Yeah. I knew you’d want it, so I had him write it down,” Jessica said. She pulled out a wrinkled slip of paper from her pocket and handed it to Lauren. “I’ll be back later. Bye!”

Lauren sighed and rolled lazily out of bed. Why was her sister hanging out with that jerk? Oh, well. Eventually, Jessica would come to her senses. She pulled on a pair of khaki shorts and a purple tank top. Immediately, she put Nick’s cell phone number in her pocket.

Nick and Jessica returned about an hour later. Just as Jessica came in the door, the phone rang, and Lauren scrambled to get it.

“Hey, Lauren?” the voice on the other end said.

A smile came to Lauren’s face when she realized who it was. “Yeah, it’s me. Greg?”

“Yeah. I was wondering if you wanted to come over tonight and watch a movie or something,” he said confidently.

“That’d be great! Hang on,” Lauren instructed. She covered the mouthpiece of the phone and looked at Jessica. “Jess, are you using the car tonight?”

“I was going to spend the night at Elaine’s,” Jessica replied, referring to an old friend of hers that she had met several years ago. “I ran into her at the store, and she invited me over. Is that okay?”

“Yeah, it’s fine, but Greg invited me to his place to watch a movie tonight. You think you can drop me off there, and he can give me a ride home?” Lauren asked. Jessica nodded. Lauren turned her attention back to the phone. “Can you give me a ride home? Jess is using the car tonight. She can drop me off, but she can’t bring me back.”

“That’s fine. My address is 157 Park Street,” Greg said. “Around seven?”

“That sounds great. I’ll see you tonight!” Lauren said. She hung up the phone and grinned. “I have a date tonight!”

Surprised, Jessica turned around and pretended to faint. “Did you just call it a date?” Lauren nodded guiltily. “My sister, on a date? Awesome!”

“Now we just need to find you a nice guy to replace your little Nicky Boy,” Lauren muttered under her breath. Luckily, Jessica didn’t hear.
