“Sure, you know you can always talk to me, babes,” he replied. He grabbed the remote and switched off the television so she could have his full attention.
“Well, um, there’s something I need to tell you.”
“What would that be?”
She sighed nervously. It was now or never. This was the perfect time, since Caitlin was already in bed sleeping, and she could talk to Nick without interruption. Now if only she could actually work up the nerve to tell him. “Caitlinisgonnahavealittlebrotherorsister,” she blurted out quickly, so quickly that he could hardly understand her.
“What? Slow down, babes.”
“I’m one-month pregnant, Nick. It’s from the night you found me crying on the beach.” After a few seconds, she dared to look up at him and meet his eyes. Instead of finding the disappointment she expected there, they were sparkling with excitement.
“That’s great! I mean, I think it is. It is, right?”
She let out a long sigh of relief. She had expected him to want her to ‘take care of it’ as soon as possible, as Steve had immediately asked her to do with Caitlin. As soon as Nick’s reaction sunk in, she felt tears of happiness begin to gather in her eyes. “Oh, thank God. I thought for sure you wouldn’t want this. I’m so glad you do.”
“Of course I do.” He stood up and pulled her off the couch, then picked her up and spun her around. “We’re gonna have a baby. You and I are gonna be parents.”
She giggled. “Nick, I’m already a parent.”
“I know, but now you’ll be a parent to my child.” He kissed her on the nose. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
“Have you told Caitlin?”
“No, I wanted to see what your reaction would be before I told anyone else.” She paused and looked up at him. “Do you want to be there when I tell her?”
“Absolutely!” He smiled as an idea suddenly entered his mind. “Let’s get married, Aims.”
“What?”
“I said let’s get married. We’re already living together and having a baby together. Let’s get married, too.”
After a brief moment of thought, she nodded. “Okay. When should we do it?”
“After you have the baby.”
“Are you sure?”
Laughing softly, he leaned his forehead against hers. “Why do you always ask me that? You know how I feel about you, Aims. You ask me like I’m actually gonna say no.”
She pulled his face to hers for a long kiss. “I guess you wouldn’t, would you?”
“You’re going to make me the happiest man alive, you know that?”
“Thanks, Nick.”
“For what?”
“For being so supportive all the time. You’re the greatest guy I’ve ever met.”
“No, I’m not.”
“Yeah, you are. Since I had Caitlin, I’ve only found two other guys that were willing to date me, and they both treated me like crap. Then I tell you I’m pregnant, and instead of flipping out, you get all excited about it and you’re actually happy. Then you ask me to marry you. You’re wonderful!”
He wiped a stray tear off her cheek. “You deserve it.”
