There was no answer. Liz must have gone somewhere. Meg almost left whoever it was standing at the door, but couldn’t help but feel guilty as they knocked again, so she stood up and dragged herself out of the bathroom to open it. When she saw who was waiting, her spirits immediately perked up. “NICK!” she exclaimed.
“Hey, sweetie. What’s wrong?”
“Do I look that bad?”
“You look tired and sick.”
“I went to a party last night and had a little too much to drink. I’m paying for it today.”
“Meg, you’re underage!” he scolded.
“Oh, come on. Like you never got drunk before you turned twenty-one,” she laughed.
“But that’s different! You’re supposed to be a good girl.” He paused. “You know, I still haven’t gotten a hug.”
She threw her arms around his neck and kissed his cheek. “I’m sorry, I know I probably smell like alcohol and, well, I threw up a few times…several times.”
“I don’t care. So you went to a party? You didn’t make out with any other guys, did you?” he teased.
Suddenly, she had a flashback of something from the party…she had been dirty dancing with someone…then she was on the couch with the same person and kissed them…was it Matt? Yeah. She had made out with Matt? Then she remembered getting out of his car and saying it had never happened. What had she done? She took a deep breath and looked at Nick, who realized she was upset.
“Uh, Meg, I was just kidding.”
She forced a laugh. “Sorry. I know. I’m just not in the best of spirits right now.”
“Good, I thought you were gonna say you actually did make out with someone else or something. You had me scared there for a few seconds,” he said, kissing her nose.
Shifting uncomfortably, she tried to hide her guilt and quickly thought of something to say to change the subject. “So what made you decide to come and visit me?”
“Well, I had a few days off, between the legs of the tour and I missed you so much.”
“Did you go to see your sister yet?”
“No, I didn’t. I came straight here.”
“She won’t be mad at you, will she?”
“Of course not. She’s probably not even awake by now, anyway. So are you happy to see me? Are you surprised?”
All she could do was nod.
“Well, I’m really glad I came. I missed you so much.”
She yawned and nodded again.
“Go to bed, sweetie. I’ll make you some chicken soup and bring it in there for you.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah, go. You’re tired. I’ll bring you your chicken soup after I call my sister.”
“Okay, thanks, Nick.” She went to her room, still shocked that she had cheated on him.
