Chapter 15

Meg picked up the phone and dialed Nick’s cell phone number. After a few seconds, he picked up. She could hear the emotional stress in his shaky voice. “Hey, Nick here.” All that went through her mind was how she caused him that pain.

“Hey, Nick. It’s Meg,” she said.

“Oh, Meg, hi! What’s up?”

“I want to talk to you, but I don’t think it’s right to do it over the phone. I want to do this face-to-face.”

“So…”

“Can you be here in a half an hour? I need to take a quick shower and then I’ll be ready to talk.”

“Sure, I can do that. I’ll be there at ten-thirty.” He pictured her brushing her hair out of her face, as she was surely doing at that moment, and squinting from the sunlight coming in through her living room window. Even after two years, he could still recall all of her habits. She never talked on the phone in her bedroom unless she really wanted privacy, and Liz was barely ever home, so surely she was curled up on the living room couch.

“Okay, I’ll see you then, Nick.” She hung up the phone and went into the bathroom.

There was a loud knock on the door almost immediately after Meg got out of the shower. She looked at her hand and realized she was shaking. This was it. She was either about to mend her relationship with the man she loved or make a complete fool of herself if he had changed his mind about her, which was quite possible with Nick. He often changed his mind.

After some contemplation and reconsidering, she opened the door to let him in. He looked at her expectantly for a few moments, and she opened her mouth to tell him how she felt about everything, but no words could come out. Finally, she just pulled his face to hers and kissed him with all the passion she had in her body. Now if he had changed his mind, she had made more than a complete fool of herself, but she didn’t care. At least she had gotten to taste his sweet lips one more time. As the kiss continued, though, she began to doubt that this would end with disappointment. There was too much passion and feeling there.

When they eventually pulled apart, he was breathless and wide-eyed. “Wow.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to shock you. I just…words failed me, and that was the only way I could see to express my feelings,” she said. Blushing, she brushed her hair out of her face.

“So that means you still love me, huh?”

“You figured that out already, Carter,” she said.

“Then what are you saying?”

“I want to give us another shot, if that’s okay with you,” she suggested shyly. “What do you think?”

“What kind of question is that? You know I’m going to say yes!” he exclaimed, picking her up and spinning her around. “I love you so much, sweetie.”

“I love you, too, Nick.” She paused as he put her down and rested her head on his chest. “Oh, gosh, I was so scared you were gonna tell me you didn’t want to be with me.”

He kissed the top of her head. “Of course I want to be with you. You’re my soul-mate, Meg.”

“I think it’s our destiny to be together. Otherwise why would you have come into the coffee shop on the day I wasn’t supposed to be working? Why wouldn’t I have left early like I had planned on the day you had come back? It has to be our destiny.”

“I think so, too. It’s destiny.”
