Chapter 12

Meg kept trying to close her eyes and get some sleep, but every time she let her eyelids fall, she saw Nick’s face again. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. She was happy with Matt now. Nick was supposed to be out of her life for good, forever. He wasn’t supposed to pop up at Beans and remind her of what they had had two years earlier.

‘I got over him almost immediately after he left with almost no trouble,’ she thought. That almost made her laugh out loud, though. No, she hadn’t gotten over him. She had thrown herself into another relationship and pushed him to the back of her mind. Now she was stuck with a question. Had she ever truly gotten over him?

Finally, she got up to make herself a cup of tea and stood in the kitchen while the water boiled. She hoped Nick was having trouble sleeping, too. He deserved it for making her even more stressed out. “Like it’s his fault,” she muttered to herself.

“Like what’s whose fault?”

Startled, she nearly jumped out of her skin and spun around to see Matt. “Matt, you scared the crap out of me! I didn’t realize you were here! I didn’t hear you come in!”

“I was quiet. When I got here, I figured you had already fallen asleep, so I was just going to sleep on the couch so I could see you in the morning. I hope you don’t mind.”

She smiled and looked up at him. How could she not love a guy who wanted to sleep on her small, lumpy, very uncomfortable couch just so he could see her in the morning? “Of course I don’t mind. That’s why I gave you a key, you know.”

“Well, anyway, what’s whose fault?”

“Oh, nothing. I’m just still thinking about…” she trailed off. How could she talk about this with her boyfriend?

“You’re thinking about Nick,” he finished for her.

“Yeah, I am. I’m sorry. You know I love you, but I just…I’m shocked because I never thought I would see him again.” She paused. “Was he jealous?”

Matt laughed. “I think so.”

“Good. He deserves it.”

“Well, what were you talking about before? What wasn’t his fault?” he inquired.

“Oh, I had just been thinking about how I hoped he was having trouble sleeping too because seeing him just made me more stressed out and now I can’t sleep, but that’s really not his fault. It’s not like he came to see me on purpose.”

“Are you sure?”

“Why would he come to see me?”

“I don’t know, but I saw the way he looked at you… I have a feeling he still cares.”

She laughed bitterly. “If he cared, he would have called and apologized or something, and even if he does still care now, he’s a little late. I’m happy with you.”

Matt pulled her into a hug and pressed his lips to her forehead. “I’m really glad to hear that.”

She rested her head against his chest and listened to his heartbeat for a few minutes.

“Maggie, you do love me, right?” he whispered in her ear.

“Of course I do,” she replied.

“Okay, just making sure.”

The teapot began to whistle, and she turned it off. “I don’t think I want tea anymore. Come lay down with me. Maybe being in your arms will help me get to sleep.”
