Chapter 5

Lila stepped into a small diner and saw Kate waiting for her. They were both free today, and they had decided to get together for lunch. “Hey, Kate!” she said warmly.

“Hi, how are you?” Kate replied.

Lila sat down on the other side of the table. “I’m just fine. What about you?”

“I’m great. Are you really okay? I mean, it’s been a year.”

She gave Kate a strange look. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about you and Josh. Why didn’t you tell me you two broke up?”

“What? Where did you hear that from?”

“I know yesterday was your anniversary, and I saw him out with that one popular blond junior, Hillary, last night. Why? Are you two still together?”

“Yeah, we are. Are you sure it was him? Couldn’t it have been someone else? He was supposed to be at home studying for a philosophy exam last night.”

“I’m pretty sure it was him. Maybe I was wrong,” Kate said quickly.

“He wouldn’t cheat on me,” Lila stated. “What were they doing? Maybe she’s in his class and they were studying together or something.”

“That’s possible. They were eating at Applebee’s. I couldn’t see if there was anything on the table.”

“He wouldn’t cheat on me,” Lila repeated as she opened her menu.
