“Did you ever remember what you wanted to tell me in the car?” Nick asked as he sat down in the sand.
“No, I didn’t. It couldn’t have been important,” Lila lied. He pulled her down next to him, and she sighed.
“What’s wrong? That wasn’t a happy sigh.”
“You’re right, it really wasn’t,” she replied, but she didn’t go into detail.
“Is it anything I can help you with?”
“Not really.” She shook her head.
“Please, Li, tell me what’s bothering you.”
“I’m in love with a guy who doesn’t love me back.”
He narrowed his eyes. “This isn’t Josh, is it?”
“No, of course not. It’s someone else. Someone I could never have. He doesn’t love me back,” she repeated, tears forming in her eyes.
Without warning, Nick tilted her chin up and looked into her ocean blue eyes. “I…I can’t imagine how someone could not be in love with you,” he whispered, brushing his mouth against hers.
Moaning softly, she responded by parting her lips and allowing his tongue to slip in. He lightly pushed her back onto the sand and explored her mouth feverishly. Suddenly, she stopped. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
“You have a girlfriend, Nick.” She stood up and walked briskly back in the direction of her house.
Nick sat on the sand for a few minutes, wondering how he could have forgotten about Ashley. Finally, he got up and walked back to his car, knowing he wouldn’t be able to look at Lila without betraying his girlfriend.
