The events of the day leaving her with the need to be close to her. Now she lay in bed beside her sleeping daughter and wished she was old enough to talk to about Brian. Since she had moved to this small town in Texas she had met a few nice people. Some she even considered her friends, but none she felt close enough to talk about Brian with. Right now she needed to talk to someone desperately and she had no one. Tears began to silently make their way down her cheeks as she thought about Brian. The way he smiled whenever she walked into a room, or the way he would sing to Hailey every night but then stay in her room well after she was asleep and just watch her. How easy he made everything for her. How easy it was to love him...and how hard it had been to leave him. Ami reached out and ran her hand down the side of Hailey's face. --I miss him so much. Why couldn't I have stayed and let myself be happy with him? Brian lay in bed staring up at the ceiling. He kept running over and over in his head what he would say when he called her...*if* he called her. All day he had done nothing but think of her. The look on her face when he saw her for the first time...when she had passed out in his arms. All the nights they sat up and talked endlessly about almost anything. Everything but the way she would react if he had told her he loved her. That he couldn't have predicted. If he had...he would have never uttered the words. Brian looked over at the clock...a little past eleven. It would still be early enough to call there. Reaching over he picked up the number off the night stand...took a deep breath and began to dial. Ami had almost cried herself to sleep when the phone rang. She quickly reached over to get it, not wanting it to wake Hailey. --Hello? Oh, hi Meg. Yes, I'm fine, thanks for calling to check on me. Ami laughed. --No, I don't want to talk about who Brian is. I'll see you in the morning. Good Night. Busy. Her number was busy. At least she wasn't asleep yet. Deciding to call her back again in fifteen minutes, he went down stairs to get something to drink. Ami lay playing with the curls on Hailey's head. --Please Brian...call me back. She stared at the phone...willing it to ring again. --I know I messed things up, but if... Ami began to cry again. --If you could just give me one more chance...I swear, this time, I will not mess this up. Brian sat back down on his bed and picked up the picture of Hailey asleep again. --I wonder if she's missed me. The ringing phone caused Ami to jump, which then caused Hailey to wake up. --Hello? Hailey began to cry and Ami was having a hard time hearing whoever it was on the other end of the phone. --Hello? I'm sorry, I can't hear... --Did I wake her up? Every muscle in her body tensed up at the sound of his voice. --Brian? It was almost a whisper. That was all she could manage. --I didn't mean to wake her up. I...should I call back tomorrow? --No! I...mean, no she'll go right back to sleep. --Are you sure? Do you want to get her back down and call me back? Ami thought for a minute. She knew Hailey was not going to stop crying until Ami got up and rocked her back to sleep. --Actually, that's not a bad idea. Give me twenty minutes? --Sure. With shaking hands, and fresh tears in her eyes, Ami hung the phone back up. --Hailey, sweetheart, you have great timing. Hailey continued to cry as Ami began to rock her back to sleep. Half an hour later Ami lay Hailey down in her crib and patted her back until she was sure she was not going to wake back up. Then she went back to her room and sat down on the bed. She stared at the phone a few moments before picking it up and calling Brian's number. Brian waited until the second ring to pick up...not wanting to seem as anxious as he felt. --Hello? --Brian, it's Ami.
