BOYS OF THE NIGHT - #20

"Nick?" Kevin asked through the darkness of the living room. His eyes scanned the sitting area, looking for him.
"What?" the Toreador whispered back sadly.
Kevin listened to where his voice came from and gracefully strode towards him. He bit his lower lip in pain. The was his child, his youngest, curled up on the end of the leather couch, lonely and depressed. This was truly weighing a toll on him. He watched Nick staring at the full moon out the window, and felt a piece of himself die.
Nick looked to him, his glowing blue eyes asking silent questions. Ones Kevin couldn't answer. He could hear them echoing in his head, and bit back tears.
"Why weren't you there for me? Why did you make me this way? Where were you when I needed you? Why?" Nick's voice resonated in Kevin's brain.
The Ventru opened his mouth to counter-attack the piercing questions, but didn't fight them as he had in the past.
He spoke up, quietly, his tone gentle. "I'm sorry."
Nick just stared, disbelieving Kevin's seemingly heart-felt apology. That wasn't the response he was expecting to get.
"I know it will never be enough, but I'm sorry, Nick. I really am," Kevin said again, his voice shaky and timid. Unlike what Nick had ever heard before.
"I'm sorry too," Nick whispered after a few minutes.
Kevin sat down next to the blonde and they watched the moon cast it's white rays in the darkened sky. The light softly came through the window, settling on Nick's face. Kevin felt a pang of hurt run through his body. He was feeling for Nick - he knew the pain.
Nick cautiously edged closer to his elder, thinking Kevin didn't see him.
Kevin could feel his warm breath on his arm. A child's breath. He realized what he'd missed out on. Nick got closer still, wanting, yearning for the love he so missed. Love from someone who could help him... and that someone happened to be Kevin.
Surprising even himself, Kevin enveloped Nick gently with his arms, pulling him into his body. He could sense Nick's warmth, baby-like breath, and for once, he felt like a father. He held his son tightly, never wanting to let go.
"Then don't let go," Nick replied softly, hearing his thoughts.
"I'm not going to," Kevin answered, resting his chin on Nick's head. They stayed this way for a long while, just enjoying the complete trust that now lay between them.
Kevin ran his hand across his child's face and his fingers touched tears. Nick had been silently sobbing. Instinctively, Kevin comforted his son, offering him words of love, reassuring him with promises. Nick's breathing eventually evened out; he was sleeping peacefully. Kevin slowly ran his hand down his back. He could feel his spine - Nick was so fraile and tender yet, still young and inexperienced. But from here on out, he wouldn't have to walk the trail alone. He'd have his father to guide him.
"We're one, Nick," Kevin whispered in his ear, cradling him. "We always will be."

"It's about time," Brian said to the other two from the top of the stairs. They watched Kevin and Nick curiously, cuddled up together like they had always been so close.
"That's whacked," AJ commented smiling, "Like, a week ago, the hate between them was so fuckin' thick, you could cut it with a knife. Whacked."
"Nicky's growing up," Howie said to them, leaning over the rail.
"Yeah. He is. And Kevin's growing up too."
Brian was content, happy that they were all in peace. Family was a big issue for the Nosferatu, and the fighting had torn him up inside. But seeing his cousin, and his bestfriend, develop a father-son relationship put him to rest. "Come on, guys. Let's leave 'um alone." Agreeing, they all walked to their rooms, ready to sleep as the sun began to peer over the new day's horizon.
