"Because You Love Me" By: Kasey (c) 2000 Mine, mine, mine - not yours, yours yours! Chapter 6. " You’ve got to be kidding me," it was cold, hard disbelief that met Kevins announcement. " No kidding around. I have a seven year old daughter that I found out about night before last," Kevin said calmly and watched, with detached amusement, as the white-faced PR assistant started pacing. Kevin shared a look with AJ and Nick, who had come along for support. The assistant shot a sharp glance at them all. " You both knew about this?" he asked. " Yep," AJ said and Nick nodded. " Why didn’t one of you say something sooner?" " It wasn’t our place to tell you. Kevin is the father, not any one of us," AJ said. " How many people know about this?" the assistant sat down and pulled out a notepad and pen. " My lawyer, my daughters mothers lawyer, the foster mother and the five of us," Kevin said, frowning as he tried to read what was being hastily written. " Is that all?" " Yes. What the hell are you writing?" " A media release. I need some sort of..." " Like hell a media release! I don’t want a word of this to get out. My daughter is my business, not all of Americas!" Kevin said angrily, surging to his feet. The assistant looked up, shocked. " But Kevin, what if some tabloid gets a hold of this? This is only protection for you," the man pleaded, but all Kevin did was snatch the notepad out of the mans hands and throw it at AJ, who immediately ripped the page off and crumpled it up. " Protection for you, you mean. You just want insurance in case someone tries to blame you if it does get out," Kevin said angrily and the young man swallowed hard, almost in fear. " That’s not true! What if some other woman makes a claim for paternity rights against you? If you’re willing to claim responsibility for one child, with no proof, where will it stop?" " How can you sit there and say I accepted this child with no proof that she is mine? You don’t know anything about this situation!" " But how do you know that this child is really yours Kevin? How can you stand there and say, with 100% certainty that this child is really yours?" The assistant said, his hands out, palms facing upwards in an attempt to make his point. " I know that she is my child because my lawyer, my private lawyer, has the proof on file at his office. I would never have accepted this child without proof! And I take offence at your assumption that I would do such a thing!" Kevin all but snarled at the hapless PR assistant, who paled and snatched his hands out of Kevins reach. " I’m sorry, but..." " But nothing. This is my business. Any arguments, problems or decisions concerning my daughter, you or your ‘people’ are to come directly to me. Do you understand?" Kevin asked firmly and waited until the man nodded, before he smiled and slapped him on the back, " So, it’s settled! Congratulate me, I’m a father!" " Congratulations Kevin," the man choked out. AJ and Nick stood and started out of the room. Kevin followed them, but stopped one step inside the room and turned around. " Oh, one more thing." " What?" the PR assistant asked warily. " My daughter is in therapy. For the next two weeks, her psychologist will be travelling with us." *****
