Chapter Two

“Nicky? Honey? What are you doing?”

“Nothing!” It had been one week since BJ had come home from the hospital with Jane.

“It doesn’t sound like nothing. It sounds like somebody trying to find something in their room that they are not supposed to.” Jane hoped she’d get to his room before he tore the place up.

“Nope… I’m not... I mean. Nobody’s doing anything like that!”

“I see. So what are you doing?” Jane added as she walked into the room.

“I told you. Nothing.”

“Come on, Nick. It’s okay you can tell me. I won’t get mad.”

“I know you won’t get mad, Mommy. It’s not that. It’s just, I know you won’t believe me.”

“Sure I will.” Jane hoped she was right.

“Promise?”

“Uh...um.... Yeah okay, I promise,” she faked a grin.

“You know when BJ starts to cry in the middle of the night?” She nodded, “Well, I know why.”

“Oh really now? Well then why does she cry?”

“It’s the boogie men!” he shuddered.

“What? Oh Nicky...”

“I knew you wouldn’t believe me. But that’s okay, I don’t need you to. As long as you know that part I guess you can know my plan. I’m going to catch them, or at least one of them. I need to protect her. I promised.”

“Oh Honey...” She touched his cheek. How was she going to tell him that…? Wait. Why tell him anything? Maybe this can help him deal with the new baby thing. Give him something to do. “I believe you.”

“You do?”

“Yep. Let me help you get what you are looking for.”

“My net.” So she got his net and for the rest of the day he was totally occupied.
