He did everything he could to get them to change their minds! He tried drinking from bottles, sleeping in a crib, talking baby talk... They just didn’t seem to care! He didn’t understand, why wasn’t this working? Then, the day came! They rushed Jane to the hospital. Nick started to cry. He didn’t know what was going on. Everyone was panicking and mommy was crying!
He sat in the waiting room on his grandma’s lap for what seemed like years. Finally a doctor came in, went right up to Nick’s dad, Bob, and said, “Congratulations Mr. Carter. You now have a baby girl.”
Bob smiled, went up to Nick and knelt down.
“You hear that, Nicky? You have a baby sister.” Nick didn’t know what to think at the moment. He just let his grandma carry him down a hall to another room where his mom was supposed to be. Nick looked down at the baby.
Who was this person in his mommy’s lap? And why are they there? Then the baby smiled up at him. Nick looked to his mom and then at the baby. He smiled back.
“Her name is BJ, Nicky,” his mother said.
“Maybe this won’t be so bad,” Nick thought to himself. The truth of the matter was, he had come to love her already.
“You are her big brother, Nicky. She’s gonna look up to you.”
“I’m going to protect her.... always.” Nick told to his family who then looked at each other.
“We know you will Sweetheart. We know.” But they were in no way prepared for what Nick meant by protect.
