Yvette looked out the window to see if she could see any signs of anything strange. `Get a grip' she thought to herself. `You're in a second floor. Nothing's going to happen'
Nick stood up and put his hand on Yvette's waist. "Are you okay?"
She jumped a little, as she turned around. "Yeah, I guess... it's just that I have this weird feeling inside me… I don't know" she smiled. "Don't mind me"
"Are you better now?" he asked, obviously concerned.
"Yeah, I am now. Do you want to go to Andrea's room?"
A smile crept on Nick's face. "Sure" he said as she led the way.
When they entered the room, they saw that Andrea was on her bed sleeping peacefully with her blanket clutched to her side. Yvette went over to the bed and put the covers over her, as she kissed the top of her head.
"She looks like a little angel" Nick whispered, as she walked towards her daughter.
Yvette smiled softly, her eyes still on Andrea. "Yeah, she is" She walked to the window and closed the shades. "It was time for her nap" she explained to Nick who was still overcome by emotion, as he realized that he was really a father.
"I just can't believe it, Yvette… I just can't believe we made her" he said, casting his eyes from Andrea to Yvette.
Yvette sighed softly. "Can we talk outside?"
"Sure, come on" he said, leading Yvette out of the room and going back to the living room.
Yvette sat down on the sofa with tears in her eyes. She didn't think that she would ever say the things she was planning to say to Nick now. As he saw that she was crying, he immediately sat next to her and wrapped her arms around her. "Sweetie,… it's okay" he whispered in her hair.
"Nick, we have to talk about so many things" she didn't wait for him to answer. "Ever since you left, everything felt as unfinished business that was never solved until now… You don't know how much I cried during those first months I knew that I was pregnant, because I knew that we could've been together. Because of my selfishness of not telling you and you being unavailable, you lost most of the important things about Andrea's life"
"Yvette I-"
"No, Nick… let me finish"
He nodded and let her continue. "My biggest fear after I had Andrea was that I wouldn't see you again. I wanted you to be there and I wanted us to experience every moment of being parents together. I wanted Andrea to make us closer… to make us love each other more… and there was a moment in which I thought that everything I wanted was never going to come true" she managed to say in between sobs. "And then, when I thought that everything was going back to `normal', Mom was diagnosed with cancer. It hurt me so much having her ask me everyday about you and about how I thought you were doing and if I ever planned to talk to you again" she wiped her tears. "She knew that I was having a hard time moving on from our relationship and she felt that she was being a hassle in my life. She saw Andrea grow up until she was four, and Nick… she didn't want to die" she explained, starting to cry again. "She wanted so many things for Andrea and for me, and for you… She loved you so much, Nick… and it hurt that you weren't there"
At that moment, Nick's eyes were filled with tears too. "I'll never forgive myself for not being there"
"No, Nick… don't blame yourself for what happened, cause in a way, I was the selfish one… Once I knew that you changed phone numbers and addresses, I gave up completely, until today"
"I admit that I was an asshole with you and I didn't treat you the way that you deserved. You know what? Until this day, my parents don't know the reasons why we broke up… I never really told them, cause deep down inside, I slapped myself for letting you go and I wanted you back so many times. I secretly wanted to look for you and start again. That's why I didn't tell them. Deep down, I knew that I was going to see you again… That's the reason why I didn't sign the divorce papers either"
"I'm so sorry, Nick"
"You don't have to be" Nick sighed as he took her hands in his. "After what I saw that day between you and AJ, I asked him about it, and he told me that nothing happened. He explained everything to me and yeah, I stupidly let him be the one who could explain instead of letting you"
"Why Nick? Why didn't you believe me? Why, if you loved me so much, did you let everything come between us as an excuse? Why break it off?"
"Yvette, I can't explain that to you, because I honestly don't know. I was blind, I guess. But, I'm willing to make everything up for you. I'm willing to be there for you, even if it is as friends… I want to be part of your life and of Andrea's life. I want to be there for once"
Yvette looked down, wiping the tears with her hands. "I-I don't know, Nickolas… Just give me some time… I need some time" she answered, getting up from the couch and away from his grip. "I-I'm going to take a shower and get to sleep… Tomorrow I have to go to work early"
Nick nodded halfheartedly. "Okay, I understand"
"Do you want to stay with Andrea tomorrow?"
"Of course" Nick smiled as he stood up and went to the door. Yvette scribbled her phone number on a piece of paper and extended it to Nick.
"Here you go, in case you need anything. My work number is on the business card" she half-smiled. Suddenly, she felt Nick's arms around her body, as he enveloped her in a tight hug. She started to cry again, clutching on to him.
"I love you, Yvette" Nick whispered in her ear.
"Nick, please… don't"
As soon as she said that, he pulled away and mumbled a goodbye as he left. Yvette closed the door, sliding her back until she sat on the floor. She put her head in her hands, wondering why she denied Nick's offer of getting back with him, if that's what she really wanted for the past four years that they had been separated.
