Chapter 10

As Yvette entered the airplane that was going to take her back to Puerto Rico, she reminisced about everything that happened with Nick, in the time that they were together. It was a week later and she had tried calling him but to no avail. He had disconnected himself from her and she understood him in some sense. If she would have been in the same situation, she would have acted the same way. A couple of hours later, the plane landed in Puerto Rico. As soon as she got out, she found her Mom and sister waiting for her at the gate. Yvette smiled softly, as Emma opened her arms, giving her a heartwarming hug.

"Mom… I don't know what to do" Yvette whispered, tears welling up in her eyes.

"Oh, sweetie, we'll get through this. Stay here for a while and we'll work things out. Have you talked to Nick?" she asked, knowing that this would put her under stress again.

Yvette sniffed softly and shook her head in denial. Emma closed her eyes and put her arm around her.

"He'll come around" was all that she could say.

"I love you, Momma... more than ever" Yvette said, smiling.

"I love you too... always..." Emma answered, wrapping her arms around her.

Meanwhile, Yvette's 20 year old sister, Stephanie was listening to the conversation without any idea whatsoever of what went on between them.

"Hey, sis" Yvette smiled as she hugged Stephanie.

"Hey Yve, could you please tell me what could possibly go wrong in your relationship with Nick? I mean, you were sickly sweet with each other" Yvette's smile quickly faded away. "It's a long story Steph… just wait `til we get to the house"

The ride to her house was a silent one, everybody lost in their own thoughts, especially Yvette. `What could my husband be doing right now?' she thought. She wondered about his well being and about how he was doing. After all, it was almost a week after the last time she saw him or even talked to him. She knew that she was going to miss their lifestyle together, but she also thought that this was the right thing to do. She needed some time for herself to think things over and at the same time, she wanted to give Nick the time that he needed, although she would miss him and his friends, who had become her friends too.

When they got to the house, Yvette went upstairs rather quickly to her old room, the one place she found solitude and peace whenever she was there. She dropped on the bed and looked at the ceiling, thinking about what she was going to do. She had so much time to spare now… the time that she could have spent with him.

Nick, on the other hand, spent his nights, bar hopping and partying here and there. He started thinking that that was the only way to solve his problems. He didn't want to think about Yvette right now and about what she was doing. He didn't know where she was, not that he didn't care too much about it either. He had invited Ashley on a few dates with him and she denied, knowing exactly what Nick was looking for.

One night, Nick went to a club with Ashley under her `just friends' policy. She didn't want to make her mistake even worse.

"Nick, stop drinking" Ashley said for the hundredth time that night.

"I told you I won't stop yet. If you want, you can go to the hotel and wait for me there. I'm not going to go back just yet. I want another drink" he rambled.

"Nickolas, I'm not going to leave you here. You have a concert tomorrow and you need some sleep. You know that if the press finds you like this, they are going to have a field day with it" she explained, trying to cast some sense into him.

"So what? It's not that I'm the perfect man in the world. My music is not doing well, my wife left me for AJ… and… and I need another drink" he said, in a nonsense manner, getting up from his chair and going directly to the bar.

Ashley followed him and turned him around. "You know that it's not true"

"What's not true?"

"That Yvette left you for AJ"

"How the fuck do you know? You weren't the one who saw them in bed? How would you feel if I, your crush, your one time love maybe, was in bed with another guy… how would YOU feel?"

"Nick, what I did was a mistake… and even if I was in love with you I would be mad, but…"

"No buts… you don't know my situation here" he finished, ordering a tequila shot.

"You're not going to keep drinking" she insisted, taking his shot out of his hands.

"You're not my fucking mother, Ashley... Leave me the hell alone!" he said, pushing her and getting his drink.

Ashley rolled her eyes and let him finish them. Then, she took him by the arm and guided him to the hotel, knowing that it was going to be a pretty long night. When they finally got to the hotel, she took him to his room and went inside with him. As soon as she got in, her cell phone started ringing.

"Hello?" Ashley said, paying more attention to Nick than to her phone.

"Hey Ash"

"Yvette?"

"Yeah it's me… are you busy or something?"

"No… well… I'm with your husband in his room. He's drunk as hell. I had to bring him from the bar to the hotel" she sighed and continued. "Please Yvette, come with him here. He needs you right now"

"He doesn't need me" she answered, dismissing the thoughts of getting an airplane ticket and going out to see him.

"Do you want to talk to him?"

Yvette sighed softly. "No it's…"

As soon as she started talking, she felt that Ashley gave the phone to Nick.

"Hey, who's this? Is this a fan?" Nick babbled.

"Nick, it's me" Yvette said softly.

"What do you want, you cheating bad wife" "So? You can't do anything about it"

"I know I can't. But please, don't get drunk. You have concerts and interviews everywhere. You wouldn't want to appear hung over in any of them"

"What are you? My mother? I don't really need to listen to you right now. We're over… and we were a long time ago… you know what? I never really loved you that much. You were just a fling like all the others, and now I realize that my biggest mistake was to marry a whore like you!"

As soon as Yvette heard this, she started crying.

"Do you really think that, Nick?" she said in between sobs.

"Yes, I really think that Yvette Marie" he answered angrily.

"Okay, well, don't you ever look for me again. It's over and for good now. Hope you have a nice fucking life!" she finally said, hanging up the phone and burying herself in the covers of her bed, crying softly until she fell asleep, somehow knowing that this was going to be their last conversation in a while.

4 years later…

Yvette stirred softly on her bed, until she finally opened her eyes. The sun was brightly shining through her drapes, so she knew that it was time to wake up. When she looked at her watch, she gasped. 11:00 am. She couldn't believe that she slept that long. It has been almost three years since she had slept for so long. Putting some shorts and a tank top on, she went outside her room and to the kitchen to serve herself a cup of coffee.

"Momma!" little 3 year old Andrea screeched as she saw Yvette.

"Hey, baby" she smiled, picking her up and giving her a kiss on her forehead.

The four years that passed were difficult and challenging for Yvette. A month after she had her last talk with Nick, she found out that she was pregnant with Nick's baby and since then, she had sworn off men from her life for good. She had thought about Nick a lot from that time on and she wondered what was going on with him and his life. She decided that if Nick wanted to know about her or Andrea, he should call them. He never did, so she never really did tell him anything about a child. `Selfish' she thought but she also thought that this was the right thing to do. She had signed her part of the divorce papers, as soon as Nick sent them and thought that she was a single woman for sure.

A year after Andrea was born, Yvette's mom Emma was diagnosed with liver cancer, and soon enough, three months ago, she died, leaving Yvette with one last plea. Emma wanted her to tell Nick about Andrea. Since then, Yvette tried contacting Nick but he seemed to have changed every phone number there was. She even tried calling AJ or Ashley but they had moved out from their old houses and she never knew anything about either of them.

Yvette's family went their separate ways after Emma's death. Stephanie, Yvette's sister got married and moved out to Florida. Meanwhile, Yvette stayed in Puerto Rico in an apartment that she had bought soon after she moved back from Florida. She had found a job in a nearby recording studio and was a producer there. Deep down inside, she knew that the best thing that she could do, was move on for her sake and for her girl's sake.

"What are we doing today, Momma?" Andrea asked, combing one of her Barbie's hair.

"Well baby, Mommy doesn't have to go to work today so, we can do whatever you want" she smiled, tickling her.

"Let's go to the park!" Andrea finally said, taking her mom's hand and dragging her out the door.

"Wait a sec, Andrea...Let me grab my things!" she giggled, picking her up and grabbing her purse and keys.

Andrea was a mixture between Nick and her. She had Nick's hair but Yvette's green eyes. Yvette was kind of sad that she didn't get her dad's eyes. After all, she loved his eyes. She inherited Nick's personality though. Most of the time, she was sweet, lovable and very energetic but when she was mad, she didn't want to talk to anybody, just like Nick. Yvette couldn't help but wonder what would be Nick's reaction, if he knew that she existed.

"Momma!" Andrea said, tugging her shirt and getting Yvette out of her daze.

"I'm sorry, sweetie...Let's go" she answered, grabbing her little hand and guiding her out the door.

Nick had been moving on rather quickly with his life, going out to parties and drinking but never really having a steady relationship whatsoever. Ashley was still a big part of Nick's life. She had become his best friend and confidant. She never really knew anything else about Yvette and sometimes, she wondered how she was handling things. She knew that she had acted as Nick's friend instead of hers, but now, she thought, was too late to even aim for forgiveness from Yvette. Nick was dating a lot of other women, but never found anything serious in either one of them and she wondered why that was. Was there a possibility that he could still be in love with the woman that was once his wife? She didn't know that, but she promised herself that she would find out.

Nick's career had been on hold after his last tour. He decided to take some time for himself and do the things that he wanted to do. He loved singing, but right now he wanted to concentrate on himself.

One afternoon, after he had spent his whole day with Ashley talking nonsense at his boat in Florida, he decided to go to the supermarket to buy some things. Ashley had been staying with him since he didn't want to be alone. They never did anything or have a relationship. They just served as each other's company. As Yvette entered the airplane that was going to take her back to Puerto Rico, she reminisced about everything that happened with Nick in the time that they were together. "I'm going to go buy some things… wanna come?" Nick said, putting his shades on and adjusting his shirt. "I'm going to clean up the place a bit… it's a mess and I don't want to live in a mess anymore" Ashley said with a laugh. "Go on and bring me something to eat!" she grinned. "What do you want?" "Whatever" she said, giving him some money. "Keep it" he answered, handing her the money back. "It's on me today" he smiled. "Thanks Nicky!" she cooed. "Now go…" she said, shooing him away so that she could clean up. Nick drove to the supermarket and he quickly found a parking spot. He smiled to himself. "I'm in luck today" he smiled, getting out of the car. Putting his shades over his head, he went into the store. He quickly passed the fruits aisle dismissing them, and slowly he passed the cereals area. He went over there and grabbed a Special K cereal. He studied the box and smirked. "This was her favorite" he whispered, referring to Yvette's cereal. As much as he hated to admit it, he missed her and he missed her a lot. That's why he couldn't move on completely with his life. Moving on, he bumped in with Yvette's favorite candy, Yvette's favorite yogurts… you name it. "Is this a sign?" he thought to himself, shaking his head in denial. "It can't be… get a grip Nick. It's a fucking supermarket… all of these things are supposed to be in here" he shrugged. "Nick?" he heard a voice say. As soon as he turned around his mouth dropped. "Oh it's a fucking sign" he thought. "Stephanie?" he said, walking over and enveloping her in a hug. "How have you been?" "I've been great… look" she said, showing him his wedding band. "You're married?!?" "Yup, just a year ago… I'm the happiest person there is" As she was saying this, he was thinking back in his own marriage with a bittersweet. It didn't last 2 months but those were the best two months of his life. "That's great! Do you have kids?" he asked. "No kids for now… although Yvette-" she said, but quickly shut up and looked down. "Yvette what?" Nick said. "What was going on with her?" he thought. "She um- she…" "Is something wrong with her?" Nick asked rather quickly. "No, I meant to say mom…" "What happened with momma?" "She's gone Nick" Nick blinked his eyes as his jaw dropped open. "She what?" "She's dead Nick" Stephanie said, fighting back her tears. "Three months ago… to cancer" "Oh my God" he breathed, running a hand through his now longer hair. "Yeah… and Yvette… well she's not dealing very good with that fact… I mean, she has moved on but it's been really hard for her. She was the one who took hair of her almost all the time. When no one was there she was, in her house, in the hospital… everywhere" As Stephanie explained, Nick started feeling a slight pang of guilt, because he wasn't there for Emma or for Yvette or for the family in general. He lowered his gaze in thought. "Here" Stephanie said, handing him a piece of paper. "I don't know if I'm doing the right or the wrong thing here… but I think that you deserve to know about her" Nick looked at her and directed his eyes towards the piece of paper. He finally realized that it was Yvette's business card with the address of her work and her phone number. "Use it if you want" Stephanie finally said, as her husband appeared behind her. "I gotta go now…" she said as she hugged him. "It was great to see you" she smiled. "Bye Steph" he said, still looking at the card. "Why did she do this? And what do I deserve to know about her?" he thought as he went to the cashier to pay his things. As he went out of the supermarket, a homeless man was looking at him begging him for money. He got out some change and gave it to him. "God bless you, young man" Nick smiled weakly. "No problem" "You know? You look thoughtful" "I'm just thinking about a lot of things right now" Nick whispered, still don't believing that he was about to pour his emotions to a stranger. "Was it a woman?" Nick nodded. "A very special woman" "Call her" he simply said, as Nick looked at him right in the eye. Soon after he said that, he continued walking. Nick was left there in awe. He shook his hair and went to his car. He got out Yvette's card again and studied it. "Damn signs" he whispered, as he started the engine and drove off the supermarket.

"I'm going to go buy some things...Wanna come?" Nick said, putting his shades on and adjusting his shirt.

"I'm going to clean up the place a bit...it's a mess and I don't want to live in a mess anymore" Ashley said with a laugh. "Go on and bring me something to eat!" she grinned.
