(5 years later)
Hallie walked through the mall. "Mommy can I get this?" asked 7 year old Erin.
"Just one, or you might get sick," Hallie smiled. She continued to walk and as usual didn't watch where she was going. She was looking for a birthday gift for her brother, when suddenly she bumped into a tall blonde man.
"Excuse m....." she looked up into his blue eyes. "Nick," she whispered.
Nick looked down at Hallie, after all these years... he still loved her.
"Dad! Daddy!" whined his four year old.
"Luke, I'm talking," he said to the blonde haired blue eyed little boy. "Hallie, I guess you found that father figure," he said motioning towards Erin.
Avoiding the question Hallie asked her own. "I guess you found a wife,".
"Yeah but she died when Luke was born,".
There was an uncomfortable silence. "Kids go and play," he called to Luke and Erin. The two looked at each other and took off.
"Nick, what happened that night," she asked.
"Why did you have to bring that up," he argued.
All of a sudden a piercing scream ran through the store.
"Luke!" Nick yelled and took off towards the scream. As Nick ran around the corner, he spotted his son, a large cherry wood table had broke while he was under it. "Oh God Luke sweetie," Nick whispered into the crying child’s ear.
"Erin, go get help!" Hallie yelled.
Nick sat with the child's head in his lap.
"Hallie, is he going to die?" he asked, tears were falling from his eyes.
Hallie bent low to his face. He leaned up and kissed her. He had missed her lips.
" Mr." a man said. "Mr. Carter..".
Nick said weakly getting up. "Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Carter, can you and your daughter stand back please," an old man said lifting the table.
Nick took Hallie's hand into his and gave it a slight squeeze.
