Melissa stared over the edge of the cliff, the peaceful scenery around her calling her her name like a whisper. The thick green vegetation covered some areas, contrasting with the cold grayness of rock. The wind pulled her long brown hair from her face to dance behind her head in the wind. She was alone. She glanced down at the sharp rocks below, images of the day's occurences flooding her mind.
"I love you, Nick..." He laughed. "I'm being serious..." His eyes flashed with surprise and confusion as they flew up to meet with hers. "Nick...you're really that blind? I've loved you for years now...you never noticed?" she said softly, a small smile playing on her lips.
"But you're my best friend. I...I mean...you're Mel...Melly...ya know?"
"Oh I see...I'm not good enough for you. I'm not in the category for Slut of the Month!" She stood up quickly...so quickly in fact that the chair she had been perched on flew backwards to the floor. "Thanks, Nick..." she coldly said as tears filled her eyes. "You've been your usual warm and caring self." He had no chance to reply as she ran from the room. The double doors that led outside crashed closed, echoing around Nick as he sat alone and dazed. She sighed as she thought about it, narrowing her green eyes at the beautiful scenery. He probably wouldn't even care if I jumped off this cliff right now... she thought as images of his face filtered into her mind. Dammit...if only I hadn't opened my big mouth.

"I can't believe this..." Nick muttered as he slammed the door shut to his cherry red Camaro and placed the key in the ignition. The tires squealed as he sped out of the parking lot to the only place she would be. In all the years they had been friends, she always went to the same place to think and be alone. He just hoped he wasn't too late.

She was so beautiful standing in the warm yellowed light of the setting sun. Her hair curled and twisted behind her head in the wind. Nick stopped on the path that led to her thinking spot. She wouldn't....would she? She shifted weight on her feet.
"Mel! Please don't jump!!" he cried reflexively.
"I wasn't planning on it," her cold response shot back, her eyes never moving from the scenery in front of her.
Now relieved, Nick made his way up to stand next to her near the edge of the cliff. Even as he stood next to her, she didn't look at him. He didn't notice the tension in her face as she held back the urge to turn to him. She wanted to hold him, to profess her love yet again...she wanted to release the frustration and hurt in tears on his shoulder. But she just stared straight ahead.
Nick fidgeted in the akward silence. He wanted to say something, to do something. He glanced down, her arms falling casually at her sides. Her hand was so small and gentle as he fit his around it...but it felt right.
Her head quickly shot over to look at him, shock the initial expression on her face before anger overcame it and she tore her hand from his.
"Mel...I'm sorry..." he whispered, his hand rising her cup the side of her face in it. "I was scared..."
"Sure you were," she replied shortly, her green eyes glazing over with a layer of tears.
"Mel...Melissa. Listen to me..."
Her eyes softened as they looked into his. From where they stood, she could see how deep blue his eyes were. They were soft in the evening light, and she could see how serious he was. No words could express the look in his eyes.
"Mel...I love you too..."
Any response she could think of was cut off as his lips touched hers.
Nature seemed to break into song as the breeze rustled in the trees and an eagle called out from it's circling in the sky...it was perfect.
