Nick walked down the hallway as he whistled happily. He just spent one of the most wonderful nights if his life in that hotel room with Melissa and was now on his way to the ice machine. He stopped to get some ice and noticed a figure walking toward him.
"Hello, Nick . . ." He looked up to find a tall blond woman smiling at him. He froze. It was her! "I don't believe we were ever formally introduced. I'm Jenny . . ." She held out her hand and he warily shook it. "Sebastian misses you . . . it's a shame he'll have to miss you for a long, long time after today . . ."
"What do you mean by that?" Nick started to back away from her, the ice bucket left forgotten in the machine.
"Well, I've thought about it long and hard . . . and since I can't have you, nobody can."
Nick's eyes widened before he pivoted and broke into a run. He kept going straight even though his room was in a branching hallway. He soon found himself at a dead end, the only escape being a window that over looked the street five stories below. He looked over his shoulder to see her charging after him, one hand rummaging in her pocket for something. She lunged for him and he deftly caught her off guard as he pulled a shining object from her pocket. He restrained her wrist and squeezed until the knife fell to the floor with a light thud.
The two struggled, Nick finally getting out of the corner he was backed into. She took hold of his arms and used her body weight so she could fling him toward the window, her eyes shadowed with bloodlust and murderous intentions. Being caught offguard, Nick slammed into the window frame and pulled her around with him, shattering the glass with her body. Losing her balance, she fell over the edge, only the grip on Nick's wrist keeping her from falling.
As security rounded the corner, Nick tried to grip her slipping hand with both of his. "Help me, dammit!" he called over his shoulder, but was too late. He turned away before she hit the pavement below, his stomach already churning. He couldn't save her . . .
"We couldn't find her accomplice . . ." the Chief of Police stated over the squealing laughter of Sebastian as he was reunited with his family. Being kept in a room directly below Melissa and Nick's, the little boy had been kept happy and quiet with video games, candy and whatever else he wanted. Anyone passing by Jenny and Sebastian would merely think it was a mother and her happy child.
"So he got away? Just like that?" Nick looked up from his son.
"It's not that simple . . . we're searching for him right now but there's no guarantee that we'll ever find him, especially since the girl is dead."
Nick sighed and returned his attention to his family as the hugs and kisses continued. She wouldn't be dead if I had done something! The police left to find whatever evidence and clues they could find . . . but the little they had found already was no where near enough for a conviction of a missing accomplice.
