Chapter 19

I tapped my heel against the wood floor. I was beyond annoyed. Whoever was supposed to pick me up was at least twenty minutes late. They were gonna get an earful. I plopped down on our red leather couch. (Don't ask). I must have snapped out of it for a minute, because the next thing I knew the doorbell was ringing. I grabbed my purse off the floor, and yelled, "I'm going. Hold on!" I ran open to the door, swung it open, and what do I see but Nick, all dressed up and looking like an angel, with a dozen red roses in his arms.

My knees gave out, and he had to close the few feet between us, to grab a hold off my arm. I caught a whiff of whatever cologne he had on. "Don't faint on me here, Laur," He laughed, and helped me up. I felt my cheeks burn. "These are for you." He said, handing me the roses.

"Thanks," I whispered, taking them. "They're beautiful." I looked up at him, awkwardly. "Ummm…I'm gonna go put these in water. You wanna come in?" I asked.

"Sure." He walked into the house like he'd lived there for years. Damn. How could it be so easy for him, when it was so hard for me just to look at him? I grabbed a vase, put the roses in, and gently ran some water over them. As I was putting them on the table, I heard Nick shuffle into the doorway of the kitchen, and clear his throat behind me. I turned around, eyeing him questionably.

"Are you okay?" he asked. I nodded feebly. "Well, from the way you almost collapsed when I came in, and the fact that your face is a shade of red I've never seen before, I'd say you were sick. But hey, that's just me."

"I'm fine Nick. Are you ready to go, seeing as we're already late?" I grinned, showing him that I wasn't being mean to him.

"Well, I had to stop and get the flowers. Last minute idea," he admitted sheepishly. I grabbed my coat and he opened the front door for me, indicating with his arm for me to go first. "After you."

We both ran out under his umbrella, covering ourselves against the light rain. "Are you okay Nick? After all the time I've known you, I don't think I've ever seen you this polite." He laughed, and headed to his car, again opening my door for me.

"Yeah, well, don't tell anyone." He grinned, and hopped in the car.

"It's a deal." 'Why is everything going so good? Why couldn't we be like this before…when we were dating? He's changed. He's different…more mature, but still the same,' I thought, and stared at him intently as he drove down the street. 'He looks good too. I feel like a piece of shit next to him. And what were the flowers all about? Was he just trying to be good old charming Nick? Or was he trying to tell me something? He knows I hate it when I can't figure him out.'

*~NICK'S POINT OF VIEW~*

I felt her eyes on me, as we left down the street. I know what she was thinking. What were those flowers all about? When I stopped at a red light, I looked over at her and grinned. She blushed, and looked out her window.

"A penny for your thoughts." I said, tapping the steering wheel lightly.

"Come on Nick. I know you've got more on you than that." She replied, turning back around to face me. I grinned and reached for my wallet.

"I'm joking, I'm joking," she said hastily, when she saw me pull out the wallet. When I kept it out, she grabbed it, brushing her hand up against mine, and took the wallet, and held it. I watched as she opened it, and flipped through the pictures. One of B.J, Brian and AJ, Aaron and Leslie, Angel and Mom, and one of her. She tapped it with her finger nail.

"She looks familiar." It was my turn to blush. I took the wallet back, saw that the light had changed, and pressed on the gas.

"Awwww Nicky. I was just lookin' for my dollar." Lauren grinned, her eyes sparkling. That was the Lauren I knew.

"Your so bad." I said, getting the highway. The drizzle had now become a downpour.

*~LAUREN'S POINT OF VIEW~*

"Your so bad," Nick laughed.

"I try." I shot back, both of us laughing. Nick leaned over and turned on the radio, a song I had never heard came on. It sounded oddly familiar though- as if I had heard it before.

'And I can see your face, Your kiss I still can taste Not a memory erased.'

I listened to the song, watching Nick out of the corner of my eye. He was hunched over, the rain was coming down in buckets now. I leaned forward to turn down the radio, so I could talk to him, when the car swerved.

I glanced over in just enough time, the seatbelt straining against my chest, to see the horror in Nick's eyes. Just before the impact, I stared back into Nick's eyes. There was so much love in them, and he flung his arms around me, and held tight until I felt him fly off. I grabbed for him with my arms, but the jerk of the car, slammed my head against the seat, and before everything went absolutely black, I saw Nick get hurled through the car wind shield.
