Chapter 16

I raced into the hospital, Jen close on my heels. "Brian Littrell." I told the lady at the front desk, my face pale, and my eyes dim. She looked at me and Jen suspiciously.

"ID?"

I reached into my purse, and gave it to her. If I was too late… She looked at it carefully, then gave me a yellow ID bracelet.

"He's in room 234. Don't take it off, or you won't be able to get back in." she warned. I looked back at Jen.

"Go on. I'll be there in a second." She said.

I nodded, and ran to the steps. The elevator would be too slow, I decided. I ran up two flights of stairs. Room 230, Room 232…I stood outside the waiting room of Room 234. "Please let him be alright." I prayed. I wiped my tears away, and walked in the room. I stepped right into Nick's arms. He hugged me tightly to him, and his tears dropped down my face, and mixed in with my own. He took a deep breath and pulled away, and I could see that his eyes were red rimmed. I blinked and turned away, and Leigh-Anne ran up to me. I hugged her, and whispered "He'll be okay, Leigh." I repeated it over and over again.

"He has to be, Lauren." She whispered back.

I released her and hugged Kevin. He looked so sad and lonely. Jen came in then, and I finished hugging everyone else.

I turned back to Nick, and lead him to a corner of the room. I stood up on my tiptoes and wrapped my arms around his waist. He just broke down and sobbed on my shoulder. "Shhhh Nick. Brian'll get through this. He will Nick. He will." I said, trying to believe it myself. Brian has to be okay. He's the shoulder that I cry on, the jokester who makes me laugh. Brian was one of my best friends. I wasn't about to let him leave us.

I closed my eyes, and squeezed Nick to me. I knew that the guys were probably watching, even in the middle of everything, I knew they still wanted us to get back together. 'Can't think about that now Lauren,' I commanded myself.

"Nicky?" I asked gently. He pulled his head up and looked in my eyes. I wanted to cry even harder at the pain that was in his eyes. So much pain.

"He'll be alright." I nodded as I said this, waiting for him to do the same. He looked down, then whispered "Yeah."

"I need you to- I need you to tell me what happened. Can you tell me Nicky? Please?" I asked him softly.

He pulled me to sit down on the couch with him. He closed his eyes, like he could see everything happening all over again.

"We were having a guys night in thing at my house you know? And Brian was getting the pizza before he came over, and it took him forever. We all wanted to know where he was at. At about 12:00 this morning some officer comes to the door and asks us if we know a Brian Littrell. We all thought he went to jail or something for speeding. The officer goes well he's been in a car accident. He's on his way to Tampa Memorial. We called Leigh-Anne from the hospital, as soon as we got here, and then we called Allie. It was about 1 AM then.

Then they took Brian to surgery. I called you. And he's still in surgery." As soon as he finished, and old gray haired doctor walked into the room. Brian's doctor.

I grabbed Nick's hand for support. I held my breath. 'Oh please God, let Brian be okay. Please God' I silently prayed. Nick squeezed back.

"I have good news. Mr. Littrell is going to be okay." At that second, the earth began moving again. I could breath again. Leigh-Anne stood up quickly. I dropped Nick's hand.

"Can we see him?" she asked quickly. She must have been so worried.

The doctor nodded and smiled. "Yes you can see him. Only one visitor at a time though. Page me if he starts to have any trouble. He's still asleep. The medicine should wear off in a couple of hours."

Leigh-Anne literally ran from the room, to Brian's bed. Kevin went in, and then Nick did. Then it was my turn.
