"Hey Jennay," I called into the apartment building I shared with my friend, Jennifer. I had just gotten back from a class at the University of Florida. I hung up my coat, and walked into our living room, and found her on our blue couch, watching The Price Is Right.
"Hey girl! You will never guess what happened! I got an A on the History test!" she jumped up and we both screamed in unison. Jen is 20, like me, and a sophomore at the university of Florida. Since I started a year after her, I'm a freshman. After I had left the house I had shared with Nick, I had looked for an apartment to share with the perfect roommate. And I wound up with Jen, who was just a tad bit of off perfect.
"This means a celebration!" I cried.
"Oh yeah! Party!" she cried, her eyes sparkling mischievously. In a lot of ways, Jen reminded me of Allie. They're both not all there in the head sometimes.
The phone rang, and Jen plopped back down on the couch. "You get it. I am too ecstatic."
I rolled my eyes, and picked up our purple (yes purple) cordless phone.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Hey Lauren! I haven't talked to you in forever!" Allie's voice screamed back at me. I laughed and made my way into the kitchen.
"Al, I talked to you last night." I replied.
"Oh well! That was forever ago!" she said back happily.
"Where are you at?" I asked her. Knowing Allie, she could be anywhere. Her and AJ had these weird tendencies to run off to Virginia for the weekend.
"I'm at home!" she said. "Leigh and Brian are supposed to be coming over. But you know how they are. You wanna come over? We'll have a blast."
I was never hesitant when Al or Leigh-Anne asked me to their houses. They knew that I couldn't handle seeing Nick. But I did have a test to study for.
"I'll have to take a rain check, Al. I have a huge ass test to study for." I told her, grabbing some Mountain Dew off the counter.
"Okay, party pooper. AJ's outta the shower. I'll talk to you later."
"Later Al."
I hung up the phone and started to head towards my room. "Jen, I'll be in my room!" I yelled.
I heard her muffled reply. "Okay!"
I sighed as I sat down on my bed. I rubbed my temples with the palms of my hands. The cool gold of my ring, the promise ring Nick had given me, hit the side of my head. I took my hand away from my face and stared at the gold ring that meant the world to me. Life had gotten so much more complicated since Nick and I broke up. I had a new job, a new house, a new life. Yet, part of me still wanted him so bad. I would have given anything for him to fall in love with me. But that's impossible, right?
