Chapter 8

Nick was called by the hospital to tell him what happened to Jessica. He was one of the people to call in case of an emergency for her.

"Oh, no!" Nick yelled when they told him what happened. He immediately drove to the ER of the hospital. Jessica's mom arrived soon after he did. She filled out all the forms for Jessica and they began to run tests on her.

Nick and Mrs. Lavent patiently waited. She was crying hysterically. Nick just sat there not knowing what to do or what to feel. After about 20 minutes, the doctor came out. Nick and her mom stood up to greet him.

The doctor said," It's not horrible news. She's going to live, but she has a very bad concussion. Also, she's in a coma. We have no clue when she's going to come out of it. Minutes, hours, or even days."

"Can I see her?" Mrs. Lavent asked.

"Of course. Just give us about 10 minutes to get her set up. I'll come get you."

Nick started crying.

"She's going to be okay," her Mom tried to console him. She had known Nick since he and Jessica started dating, but had no clue what went on between them not too long ago.

"But, it's all my fault. She wouldn't be here if it weren't for me."

"What do you mean?"

Nick explained the whole situation to her. She didn't seem upset with him.

"I believe that everything happens for a reason," she began. "Don't blame yourself for this. It was meant to be. I don't know why, but it was."

The doctor called her to see Jessica. "You can go after me," she told Nick and walked into her room.

Nick still felt guilty. He couldn't help but be. The doctor waited outside while Mrs. Lavent was in. Nick went up to him. "Tell me the truth, sir. How bad is it?"

"I'm not exactly sure. It's not good that she's in a coma with a concussion. That's never good. I can't promise that she'll come out of it. We'll just give it a couple days and go from there."

"Thank-you." Nick was trying to control himself. It was his turn to go see Jessica. He walked in and sat in a chair by her bed. Nick took her hand and kissed it. Tears streaming down his face again.

"I am so sorry, Jess. You don't know what I'd give to take it all back. I completely blame myself. You were crying when you left today and I know that must have affected your driving. And it was my fault you were crying. I finally realized that I do still love you and care about you. The bad thing is, that it took this to happen for me to see it. I hate myself for this. I'm sorry for everything. For yelling, being rude, sending you away. Please come out of this so we can work everything out. I love you." Nick sniffed and tried to wipe away his tears.

Jessica's mom walked in the room. "I guess I should take off work tomorrow so we'll know when she wakes up."

"You can go to work if you need to. I'll stay with her. And I'll call you as soon as anything happens."

"That's really sweet of you, Nick. Thank-you."

"You're welcome. I'll do whatever I can to help." Jessica's mom went home.

"Do not leave me, Jess! I need you to stay strong and come out of this. I'll go crazy without you."

The hours passed and Jessica never awoke. Soon, Nick fell asleep in the chair, still holding her hand.
