Jessica wasn't herself lately. She was waiting for the time to come that she got over Nick. But, it never came. So, she gave up trying and called A.J. They'd become good friends since she left. He answered his cell immediately.
"A.J., it's Jessica."
"Hey! I'm so glad you called. Guess what? We're in your hometown!"
"What? You're in Tampa? That's great."
"I thought you'd be happy."
"Of course, I am. I was calling to find out where you guys were. I really need to talk to Nick."
"He's been angry lately."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, his whole attitude is just full of anger. Now, I'm no psychologist, but I think he has a problem."
Jessica laughed. "Tell me, A.J., where are you all staying?"
"In the Radisson on 3rd street."
"Really? That's not far from here."
"Well, what are you waiting for? Me and the guys, except Nick, are going out. He never goes out anymore. So, why don't you come by in half an hour. You'll be able to talk to Nick. It's room 205."
"Thank-you so much A.J."
They hung up and Jessica began to get ready. She had everything planned out that she would say to Nick. Thirty-five minutes later, she was knocking on room 205.
Nick answered the door, took one look at Jessica, and said, "What are you doing here?"
"I came to talk to you."
"How did you find out where I was at?"
"A.J. told me. I really need to talk to you."
Nick sighed. "Fine. Five minutes." He let her in and slammed the door shut. Jessica began to realize what A.J. meant by Nick being angry.
"Nick, are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Now what do you have to say? Time's running out."
"Why are you being like this? What have I done?"
"What have you done! You're asking me that?! You never called like you said you would. I didn't know whether you were dead or alive. It's like you just forgot me or something. I have feelings too, Jessica. I thought since we were supposed to be friends, maybe one day we could work things out and get back together. But, obviously, you didn't want to be friends either, or you would have called."
"I'm sorry, Nick. I really am. I just couldn't call."
"It's too late to be sorry."
"Nick, I really want us to work things out."
"Now you want to work things out. Well, it's over. Please leave, Jessica. I don't want to talk about it anymore."
"Don't do this. I really am sorry. It was just too hard for me to call. But, I'm sorry."
"Well, I'm glad you finally realized that, but you really are too late."
"Okay. I'll leave now. Good-bye Nick." She walked out of the room crying. It had all gone wrong. Blindly, she pulled out into the highway. Her car phone rang and she answered it. It was Kari.
"What's wrong, Jessica?" she asked.
"Nick. It's horrible. He was so angry. I went to see him."
"You did?" Kari said. "Is he in town?"
"Yeah. He is. I went to see him and he was so mad at me. He told me to leave."
"Jess, you shouldn't be driving while you are this upset."
"Don't worry about me. I'll be alright."
"Call me later, okay?"
"Okay," Jessica said and hung up the phone. Her tears were making everything blurry as they streamed down her face. Jessica didn't even see the car that pulled out and hit her.
