"Jessica,?" She opened her eyes and saw Nick standing beside her. "Jessica, you shouldn't be out here. You're supposed to be resting in bed."
"I know, but it's so beautiful out here." (pause) "I love the ocean," she said.
He gently put his hand on her shoulder. "Come back inside. I have your ice. Kari was called back to work, but she says she'll stop by again later."
"Okay."
They walked inside and Jessica got back in the bed. Nick sat beside her and put the ice on her head.
"I want to know about my accident."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, that I want to know what happened that day. How was I in the accident? The doctor told me that even after people get their memory back, they don't remember events that lead up to the accident. So, I want to know."
Nick didn't know what to say. He couldn't tell her the truth, but he didn't want to lie. "I have no idea what happened. I hadn't talked to you in a few days."
"Well, who would know? My mom wouldn't. I didn't even live with her. Maybe Kari knows."
"It's no big thing. The accident wasn't your fault. A guy ran a stop sign. I don't know anything else though."
"Well, for some reason, I feel like I need to find out."
"Let's just wait and see how much you remember."
"Alright."
"Your mom left a note. She wants you to call her at work. And, you need to eat something soon. It's lunch time."
"Already?"
"Yeah. What do you want? I'll get it for you."
"I don't want too much."
"How about some soup? Some chicken soup."
"Well. . . I guess so."
"Good girl!"
"Excuse me? That sounds like something my mother would say to me."
"I am taking her place for today. I'll go fix your lunch and you call your mom. Her number's right there by the phone." He walked out and went downstairs.
Jessica picked up the phone and dialed her mom's number.
"Hello. Internal Revenue Service."
"Hey, Mom."
"Jessica, how are you feeling?"
"I'm alright. My head just hurts a little."
"Have you had anything to eat?"
"Not yet, but Nick's cooking me something."
"I hope you don't mind me calling him to stay with you today."
"It's alright. I just don't want him to come if he doesn't want to."
"I know for a fact that he wants to. He offered yesterday."
"He did?"
"Yeah. I just want to make sure you're okay and I know Nick will watch you carefully."
"Kari came by earlier."
"That's good. She was really worred about you. Sweetie, I hate to cut this short, but I have to get back to work."
"Alright. I'll see you when you come home."
"Okay. Bye."
"Bye," Jessica hung up the phone. Then, she walked downstairs into the kitchen where Nick was.
