"He's a really nice guy," Jessica said when Nick walked out.
"He's okay sometimes," Kari replied.
"Kari, you look so different. Of course, that's because I can't remember."
"Don't worry about it. Please. You'll remember. Where's your mom?"
"She had to work. I think that's why Nick's here. They don't want me to be alone."
"You do need somebody here with you."
"Nick said he was going to spend the day with me here."
"That's good."
"Tell me some things, Kari."
"Like what?"
"I don't know. Anything to help me remember."
Kari sat down with Jessica on the bed. "Time passes so quickly these days. So many things have changed. When we were in the group. . . have you heard about that?"
"Yeah. Forver Love. Nick told me. It broke up."
"Well, you were the lead singer. We all loved singing, but it was like we knew it wouldn't last."
"What do you mean?"
"We always prepared ourselves for what we would do if it ever did break up. We promised each other we would remain friends, and we were. We still are. In a sense of things."
"You seem so sad, Kari."
"You don't remember, but me, nor you, has talked to Julie in weeks."
"Where is she at?"
"I don't know. She hasn't returned my calls. She never returned yours either. So, we gave up."
"Oh."
"Anyhow, she'll probably call us soon." Kari didn't want to upset Jessica. "What did you plan on doing today?"
"Nothing. I have to stay in bed. Doctor's orders. Nick said we could watch TV together."
"You seem to be fond of him."
"How, so?"
"You keep mentioning him."
"Well, me and him were supposedly really good friends before."
"Yes, you were." For some reason, Kari still despised Nick.
"My head hurts so bad."
"I'll go get you some ice." Kari got up and went downstairs for ice."
Jessica got up and walked over to the door that went out to a balcony off her room. She'd always loved going out there when she was younger. It overlooked the ocean. It was windy outside and the breeze went straight though her white tank top and blue plaid pajama pants. But, she stayed on the balcony anyway.
Jessica remembered playing, on the beach below her, as a little girl. She even remembered the day her and her parents moved into the beach house. The crashing of the waves gave her a feeling of familiarity. She closed her eyes and saw herself walking on a beach.
