The memories flowed through Nick's head. It was almost as if he were living it again. "March 27th, 1997. You had just turned 17 a couple weeks before. You walked into our tour bus with Julie and Kari."
"Tour bus?"
"Yeah. I'm in a musical group. The Backstreet Boys. You were in a group too. Forever Love."
"I remember me and Julie and Kari were planning that. I never thought it would go anywhere. We always wanted to be singers."
"You are a great singer. Forever Love went on tour with us to be our opening act."
"Am I still in the group?"
"No. It broke up."
"That's terrible."
"It was for the best. And you're all still friends."
"I've known them since I was little."
"I know. We need to call Kari too. She'll want to know how you're doing."
"Okay. There's a phone right there."
Nick picked up the phone and dialed the number that Kari had wrote on a piece of paper for him.
"Hello?" Kari answered.
"Hey, Kari. It's Nick."
"Nick! How's Jessica?"
"She came out of her coma yesterday."
"Really? Where is she at?"
"Right here. We're at her mom's."
"I'm coming over." Kari hung up.
"I'll be right back," Nick told Jessica. He went downstairs and waited for Kari to arrive. She did, in about 5 minutes. They were outside.
"Kari. I have to tell you something."
"What?"
"Jessica can't remember the past five years f her life. She doesn't remember anything after the age of fifteen."
"I can't believe this."
"Neither can I."
"It's all your fault. I hate you. Does she know what went on between you two?"
"No. Mrs. Lavent didn't want me to tell her. It would cause her stress."
Kari pushed past him and went into the house. He followed her up the stairs to Jessica's room.
Kari and Nick walked in. "Hey, Jessica," Kari said.
Jessica looked at Kari. "Your hair! It's brown now. Not blonde."
"Yeah, girl. You helped me color it about a year ago. I've kept it this way since."
"Oh. Has Nick told you about. . . "
"Yeah. He told me. But, don't you worry. Sometimes it just takes a couple days for it to all come back." Kari turned her attention to Nick who was standing in the doorway.
"Could you please let us talk alone for a few minutes?"
"Sure," he said and turned away to walk out.
