"I need the two of you to please leave for a minute, so I can ask Jessica some questions," the doctor said.
Nick and Mrs. Lavent walked out. They waited for a few minutes and the doctor came to talk to them. "I have some bad news."
"Oh, no. What is it?" Mrs. Lavent said.
"Jessica doesn't remember the past 5 years of her life. So, she has this form of amnesia. I'm not sure if it's temporary or permanent. Jessica could start having flashbacks. As early as tonight, she could start remembering them. But, we can't tell at this point."
"I can't believe this," her mom said.
"You can go and see her if you like. I'm really sorry." The doctor walked off.
"I'm going to go in and talk to her," she sad and walked into Jessica's room.
Nick sat down and his eyes started to fill with tears. He had been so sure that when Jessica woke up , they would be able to get on with what was between them and build a stronger relationship. Now, it was eating him up inside that he couldn't tell her how much he loved her. He walked into Jessica's room where her mom was talking to her.
"Nick," Jessica said. I'm sorry that I don't remember you. Mom just told me that you're a really good friend of mine."
"It's okay. Yeah, me and you were really good friends."
"Jessica," her mom said. "I'm going to take you home tonight. We need to stop by your apartment and get some of your things."
"Okay. I didn't know I had my own place."
"You do. We have to get your keys from the nurse's desk. They have all your personal things," Mrs. Lavent said.
***The Next Day***
The next morning, Jessica woke up in her old room in her parent's house. Mr. Lavent was stationed in Germany and wold be gone for a while. Jessica sat up. The sunlight was pouring in through the window. Her head was pounding. The doctor had ordered bed rest for Jessica all day today.
"Hey," Nick said as he walked into her bedroom.
"Nick. What are you dong here?" she asked.
"Well, I was kind if hoping that I could spend the day with you."
"I can't go anywhere. I have to stay right here. In bed."
"I know. Maybe we could just watch TV or something."
"Why?"
"Why, what?"
"Why do you wanna stay here with me all day?"
"Because. I love you. Like a friend and all." Nick stumbled over words. "I know you don't remember, but me and you were really close. We've done some fun things together."
"Well, come sit down and tell me."
Nick sat down on the edge of Jessica's bed. In ways, he saw the old Jessica in her, but there was still a lot missing.
"How old are you, Nick? Oh, and could you hand me that hairbrush?"
Nick picked up a brush that was on her nightstand, and handed it to her. "I'm 19."
"I'm 19," she said.
"Yep." Nick made himself more comfortable by Jessica on the bed. He grabbed the remote and cut on the TV.
"Tell me some things. Maybe it will help me remember," Jessica said.
"Well, I've only known you for two years, so I can only start from when you were 17."
"That's okay. How did we meet?"
