Chapter 8

Cassie arrived at the party with Reuben right on time. Morgan suggested that Cassie arrive a little late. That way, Nick and Melissa would already be there. So, she took a few extra minutes to get ready.

Cassie immediately scanned the crowds of people. She spotted Nick and Melissa quickly. Right in the middle of all the commotion. They were the hottest couple at school, and everyone knew it.

Reuben grabbed her hand and led her to where everyone was dancing. "Are you ready to make some people jealous?" Reuben asked as they started dancing to the music.

For the next hour, Nick watched as Cassie and Reuben flaunted all over each other. "What is she doing?" he thought. "Why is she suddenly so interested in Reuben?"

"Nick," Melissa said. "Let's dance some more."

"Not night now, baby. I just wanna sit for a few."

"Well, I'm going to mingle," Melissa said and walked off.

Nick kept watching Cassie. She laughed at whatever Reuben was saying. A slow song came on and Reuben held her close. It made Nick sick and he didn't know why. Just the sight of his hands on her made him sick. Then, he watched as Cassie leaned in to kiss him. That was it. Nick couldn't take anymore of it.

"Cassandra Owens!" Nick yelled across the room as loud as he could.

The music stopped and everyone looked up. Nick's face was a bright shade of red. Without another word, he pushed people out of his way to get to the door. He walked out and slammed it behind him.

Morgan gave Cassie a knowing look. Morgan knew she had been right.

Melissa walked outside to find Nick. He was sitting on the front porch. "Nick, what's gotten into you?"

"I need to talk to Cassie," he said.

"You can talk to me."

"Go get Cassie."

"I think she's pre-occupied with Reuben."

"I don't care! Tell her I want to talk to her now."

Melissa went in and found Cassie. "Cassandra, Nick wants to speak with you."

Cassie rolled her eyes at Melissa calling her Cassandra, but didn't say anything about it. "I'll be back," Cassie said to Reuben. He winked to her as she walked out the door to see Nick.

On the front steps, she sat by him and said, "What's up?"

"Tell me what is going on with you and Reuben."

"We're just having some fun."

"You're all over him!"

"What's it to you?

"I happen to care about you."

"Nick, I thought you'd be happy for me. I'm getting out and dating like you said. Why are you so mad?"

"Because. . . I . . . I. . . Just don't wanna see you hurt. You're like a sister to me and everything. I have to watch out for you."

"Listen, I'll be fine."

"Alright. I'm sorry. I love ya girl."

Cassie smiled. Morgan was wrong. Nick just thought of her as a sister. right at that moment, the whole night seemed like a complete waste of time. And Cassie felt utterly stupid for going along with the plan.
