The next day, Nick had a date with Melissa. He was still very upset about the activities that took place the night before. He knew he had to call Cassie and talk to her. Try to work things out so they could be friends again. He was wondering though if Cassie was right. Was he just scared to let himself feel what he truly did? Did he really have those kind of feelings for Cassie? Is that why he is having so much trouble with committing to Melissa? He put all of the questions aside for now.
Nick picked up Melissa and they went to the lake. On the grass, they had a picnic.
"Nick, you look so good with your hair like that," Melissa told him.
"Really? I'm glad you like it."
"I do."
"I've got to call Cassie later today. I think me and her need to work some things out."
"I see," Melissa said. She really hated to hear anything about Cassie.
"Something is wrong between us. Maybe we're growing apart."
"You can't stay in your childhood years forever, Nick. You and her are bound to grow apart. I think it's better for you."
"Why do you say that?"
"She hasn't grown up very much. You're way more mature than her. I don't want to see her hold you back."
Nick quit listening to what Melissa was saying. He heard Cassie's words over and over again in his head. "I wish you the best with Melissa. May you be happy together for a very long time." Nick tuned back into what Melissa was saying.
"You've got to move on from her, Nick. She's like a little girl trying to play house. You're not that ten year old little boy anymore. Anyway, you have me now." Melissa put her hand on the side of his face.
More of Cassie's words ran through his head again. "Don't do what you don't feel." Nick thought. "Don't do what I don't feel," Nick said out loud to himself.
"What?" Melissa questioned curiously.
Nick pushed her hand away from his face. "I can't do what I don't feel. I have to do what's right. You have never given me any support in anything that I've ever wanted. You never supported me in my basketball, or school, you've never offered to help me study for a big test and you've never been supportive of letting me have Cassie as friend. Cassie has always been there for me. She's never let me down. She has given me support in every area that I ever needed support in. Even you. She can't stand you, but she would give me advice and wish me luck with you. She even helped me decide where to take you for our one month anniversary. So, here I am with a girl that can't possibly truly care for me, while the only girl that ever has is sitting at home all by herself. Thanks a lot, Melissa. I really mean it. If it weren't for you, I would have never realized who I truly love." Nick stood up and left Melissa there calling his name.
