Chapter 9

After taking the antibiotic for a few days, Nick could tell Gavin was feeling a lot better. He smiled more and wasn't nearly as irritable. Nick was glad that he had started to feel better again. It was no fun to have a sick baby.

Nick hated to change diapers. That was the one thing he hated about parenthood. Gavin never made it easy either. He liked to squirm around and drive Nick crazy. Which is exactly what he was doing now. Nick had to go grocery shopping and was trying to get Gavin ready. Gavin had other plans, like driving his father insane.

Nick had managed to get the diaper off, but Gavin had a mild diaper rash, making it almost impossible to put another diaper on. Nick had put the baby lotion on the sore spots to make the rash go away, but he could tell it still bothered Gavin.

The phone started to ring and Nick cursed at himself when he realized Aaron was in the shower, and he would have to get the phone himself. He kept one hand on Gavin so he wouldn't roll off the changing table and struggled to reach the phone with his other hand. Gavin picked that moment to start pinching his finger.

"Oww," he yelped as he felt the tiny prick.

Nick grabbed the phone and stuck his finger in his mouth to ease the pain.

"Hwllo" Nick said with his finger in his mouth.

He immediately froze when he heard the sound of his mother's voice. Gavin kept trying to grab his arm, but he kept shrugging him off.

"What do you want?" Nick demanded.

"I want to talk to Aaron," her hostile voice sounded.

"Yous get cooties," Gavin said tugging on Nick's arm.

Nick glanced at his son for a moment and the returned his attention back to the phone. He took his finger out of his mouth, which Gavin grabbed onto.

"He's busy, he can't talk to you now." Nick said irritated.

"Was that my grandson?" Jane asked softly.

"He's not your grandson. He is my son. He is nothing to you. I made that very clear a long time ago. So don't try to claim him as anything because he is nothing to you."

"You are my son Nickolas, that makes him mine." She insisted.

"Gavin is Amanda's and mine. You didn't want me to be with Amanda, so I don't want you anywhere near Gavin. I don't want him messed up like Aaron and I are. You will not do that to my son." Nick said his voice hard.

"I didn't do anything to you boys" Jane cried.

"Bull crap mother. You know as well as I do that you embezzled money from us numerous times. You made our lives into fame and money. That's all we were to you and dad, paychecks. We weren't your kids. We were an easy way for you to gain money. You didn't love us. You loved the figures that we were getting. The more money we made, the more you claimed to love us, but that is not going to happen anymore. I will not allow it." Nick said.

"I want to talk to my son, let me speak to Aaron" she kept insisting.

"He is no longer your son Jane, he's been emancipated. He owes you nothing anymore. Just leave us all alone," Nick said before hanging up the phone.

He took a few deep breaths to calm himself down and then turned his attention back to Gavin. He looked scared. Nick finished putting his diaper on and scooped him up in his arms. He hugged him close to him and kissed his forehead,

"I love you Gavin," Nick said looking into his clear blue eyes.

"I wob you too daddy," Gavin said resting his head on Nick's shoulder.

"Daddy do you hab cooties too nows?" Gavin said looking at his father with scared eyes.

Nick laughed lightly.

"No baby, I don't have cooties," Nick said rubbing Gavin's back.
