Chapter 6

“Aaron!” Nick yelled trying to get all of Gavin’s things into one diaper bag.

He had called the doctor earlier that morning only to find out that the pediatrician that Gavin usually went to had resigned. After several attempts he finally managed to get his son into the four o’clock appointment with Doctor Hilton. That was in twenty minutes. He was going to be late.

“I thought you left already, you have to be there by four,” Aaron said walking into the kitchen.

“Thank you Mr. Obvious, but no, I’m not gone. I’m running really late and I need your help. Please go get Gavin dressed and ready to go while I go start the truck. “

Nick left the kitchen, diaper bag in hand, and headed out to his Durango. He started the truck and returned inside to get his son. Aaron was still in the process of getting him dressed. Gavin didn’t feel well therefore was making it harder for Aaron to get him dressed. Nick took over and had him dressed a few minutes later. Aaron shook his head. He would never understand the bond between Gavin and Nick. They loved each other so much. They were all each other had. Gavin would be pouting, then see Nick, and be nothing but smiles. Nick couldn’t seem to function without Gavin. He wished he had a relationship like that with his father.

Nick picked his son up off the changing table and headed out the door. Aaron walked them out and helped Nick get Gavin into his car seat.

“Have fun!” Aaron called out as Nick pulled out of the driveway.

Nick waved and turned his attention back to the road. Gavin was playing with his toys quietly in the backseat.

“I wob you daddy,” Gavin said while chewing on his fingers.

“I love you too baby, but I wish you wouldn’t chew on your fingers all the time.” Nick said laughing,

Gavin smiled and returned to his toys. Gavin wasn’t usually this calm when he knew he had to go to the doctor, but after Nick bribed him with a trip to the toy store earlier that morning, Gavin had been all smiles.

They reached the doctor’s office moments before Gavin’s appointment time. Nick tried desperately hard to juggle the baby and the diaper bag. He ended up only dropping the bag once. Someone opened the door for him and he got into the doctors office with little to no problem. Gavin had permanently attached his arms around his neck and Nick struggled to sign Gavin in.

Gavin leaned up against Nick’s chest and place both hands on either side of his face. Gavin gave his a slobbery kiss and ended up knocking Nick in the nose with the side of his head. Gavin clapped as Nick winced in pain.

“You little stinker!” Nick chuckled tickling his tummy.

“I wob you daddy,” Gavin said placing his tiny hands in Nick’s hair.

Gavin giggled and bounced on Nick’s lap contently. Nick smoothed out his hair and kissed the top of his head. Nick closed his eyes and placed his head on top of Gavin’s. He prayed a silent prayer that his son would be ok. A nurse came out of the side door and called Gavin’s name. Nick stood up and followed the nurse down the hallway.
