Chapter 31

Nick pulled up into the drive and shut of his truck. He closed his eyes and prayed silently that he was making the right decision by doing this. He could feel that something was going to happen, he just wasn't sure what yet. He noticed that she was already there, and grabbed his stuff out of the backseat. He carefully picked up the peach roses he had purchased for her earlier. She hated red roses, so he hoped the peach ones would prove successful. He let himself inside the house and left his things in the small living room. He followed the scent of chocolate all the way into the kitchen, before he found Kayleigh putting cookies on a plate. He walked up quietly behind her and wrapped his arms around her middle. She jumped slightly, but then relaxed back into his arms.

"Want one baby?" She asked holding one towards his mouth.

He leaned down and took the cookie into his mouth. He smiled while he chewed it, thinking that life could not get any better than how it was at that moment. He was falling in love, no use denying it. The couple walked into the living room and lay side-by-side on the couch. Kayleigh had rented a bunch of chick flicks for their weekend together. Usually Nick would throw a fit about having to watch them, but the only concern he had was to spend time with Kayleigh, and figure out how she really felt about him. He had planned on telling her he loved her before their weekend was over, and prayed she felt the same.

She snuggled into his chest and quietly drew circles on his shirt with her fingertips. She sighed softly and leaned her head back against him. She couldn't believe that she had fallen so fast, and so deeply for another person. She had tried for years to keep her heart locked up and free from damage, but now she was ready to give it away, to give it to Nick.

"I'll be back baby, I have to use the bathroom," She said standing up.

"I'm going to go get something to drink while your gone. " Nick said slapping her butt and walking away.

She yelped and slapped his arm, making him laugh almost uncontrollably the whole way to the kitchen. He loved her. He dug around in the refrigerator looking for something that wasn't diet. He could not handle the taste of diet pop. On the second shelf there was a 6-pack of Mountain Dew with his name on it. He smiled knowing that she had bought it just for him. He grabbed one and opened it. After he stole another cookie off the green plate, he made his way back into the living room. He heard the front door open, and assumed she was letting her baby, Libby out. He glanced down the hall and seen that the bathroom light was still on. He shook his head and walked back to the living room.

"Kay-Babe, Surprise, We're here!!" A voice rang out from the entryway.

Nick felt his heart stop. It couldn't be. He felt the hair on the back of his neck stand on end and his arms were immediately covered with goose bumps. It wasn't her voice, it couldn't be. There was no way she was gone! Ignoring his better judgment he crossed the room towards the front door. He dropped the mountain dew all over the floor the minute he laid his eyes on her. It was her. It was a shock. He felt his body go numb.

"Amanda," He whispered hoarsely.

She glanced his way quickly, then the color drained from her face, knowing that the man she was technically still married to was standing less that 10 feet away.

"Nick," She said quietly, trying to ignore his eyes.

Nick could feel the tears coming. He swore that his heart wasn't beating. He felt like he was going to pass out. She wasn't dead she was still here. His wife was alive and standing in the same room as he was. Kayleigh came into the room then and flung here arms around Amanda.

"How's my favorite sister-in-law?" She teased smiling.

She hugged her again and asked her why they had come.

"Well…um…we were going threw and I had the crazy idea to come stop by here, but I guess the jokes on me," She said glancing in Nick's direction.

Kayleigh laughed. "Where's my brother??"

"He's outside. He found a stray a week ago, and he takes it everywhere with him now, you know how he is." Amanda said laughing nervously.

"Where's my manners," Kayleigh said slapping her forehead. "This is Nick," She said pointing in his direction.

Nick found his voice and spoke up. "We've already met."

`Oh, so you two know each other?" She asked innocently.

"You could say that," Nick said quietly. "She's my wife"
