Kayleigh's face was a look of shock as she searched Nick's eyes for
a joke. His mom got arrested? She watched him closely, and realized
he was extreamly nervous. She could tell by the way he held his son
just a little tighter than normal. The way his eyes scanned the room
quickly, never lingering. She stepped closer to him and wrapped
them both in a hug. The two of them had become extreamly important
in her life, over the short time that they had known each other.
She held them both tightly and momentarily envisioned herself in the
role of mother and wife. She quickly dismissed the idea and pulled
away.
"I need you to go with us. I can't go alone. I have to go pick them
up. Angel is there at the police station, I'm not sure if she was
there during the arrest or not. I just can't face my mom alone."
Nick said looking into her eyes.
She nodded and grabbed his hand.
"It'll be ok"
She took Gavin from him to get him cleaned up, while Nick went
outside to start the van. Aaron was outside messing around in the
garage and Nick relayed the whole conversation with the police to
his younger sibling. Aaron wanted to go to and went into the house
to go change. Alone with his thoughts, nick started his truck and
let it run for a few moments. He was so lucky to have someone like
Kayleigh in his life right now, He wasn't sure if he could have
handled everything if she hadn't been with him.
A few moments later Kayleigh was bringing the baby out to the car.
She smiled at him as she buckled Gavin into his safety seat.
"You ok?" She asked softly throwing a glance his way.
"Yea, I just don't want her around my son." Nick said softly looking
at the dashboard.
Kayleigh shut the passenger door and opened the driver's one. She
turned Nick to where he faced her and leaned into his seat. She
turned his face so that he was looking into her eyes.
"Everything will be ok. We're going to go pick them up and take them
home. I will hold Gavin so that she can't touch him if that will
make you feel better. I know how you feel about her. Aaron will be
with you. You are not alone in this." She said rubbing his arm
gently.
"I didn't even know they were separated," Nick whispered before he
broke into tears.
She hugged him tightly and rubbed his back. He laid his head onto
her shoulder and cried for the longest time. He couldn't hold it in
any more. As much as he swore her off, she was still his mother, and
his family still mattered. He cried for himself, and the broken
relationship he had with both of his parents. He cried for Aaron and
the other kids, knowing how hard it was to see their perfect little
family fall apart. None of them besides Aaron knew about how screwed
his mother had been for a while. The girls were too blind to see
that their mother wasn't as perfect as they had once thought. She
made a huge mistake that had caused her to lose two sons and a
grandson. He cried for Gavin, knowing that he would never have a
grandmother, unless he remarried. Even then it still wouldn't be a
biological grandparent. He was really dreading this trip to the
police station.
