Chapter 18

From Kayleigh's Point Of View....

She was nervous. She had not been out on a date in so long. Normally guys didn't really look in her general direction. She was amazed that Nick was so interested in her. Most guys would have gone screaming in the opposite direction by now. She knew Nick would when he got to know her better. She had the personality of a fish; well at least she thought so.

She worked with children everyday of her life. Most men saw something wrong with that attribute. She loved children dearly. She strived to make sure that they all had a different childhood than the one she did.

She moved away from the bathroom sink and busied herself by putting her make up away. She had decided to get dressed up for this evening. She had showered and shaved, perfumed and applied all of the necessary make up. She had picked out the dress she wanted to wear earlier and it was spread a cross her bed. She just had to get dressed and she would be ready to go.

She still had almost an hour to spear before Nick was due to arrive, so she held off on getting dressed. She went down stairs and put the dishes away that had dried in the drainer. She clean up the rest of the kitchen and picked up the living room. If Nick decided to come in she didn't want him to think she lived in a messy house. She really was quite the neat freak. Everything in its place. That's usually the way it went.

She sighed as her mind once again returned to Nick. He was adorable, so was his son. She really loved Gavin. Considering he had grown up so far without a mother. She could tell that they were both stronger than they realized. She knew what it took to be strong. She had to overcome many things in her childhood that most kids never did. She admired the two year old for being so happy regardless of the situation, granted he probably didn't understand what was going on around him.

She shook her head and closed her eyes. No matter how hard she tried, the haunting images from her childhood always managed to seep their way back into her mind. It was like a curse that had never been lifted, a spell never broken. She hated to think about it, she managed to think about it often though.

She glanced at the time and realized she had almost a half hour before Nick's arrival. She decided she better go ahead and get dressed in case he came early. She didn't know how to act around him. She liked him, that much was certain, but he had lost his wife, the love of his life. Was he really ready to move on? Was she going to get hurt in all of this? Questions that she couldn't answer but plagued her mind nevertheless. She wished she knew the answers, but finding them would mean she had to talk to Nick about it. That was something she couldn't do. Imagine that he only longed for another adult's companionship.

She climbed the stairs and made her way to her bedroom. She managed to get dressed moments before the doorbell sounded from downstairs. She quickly grabbed what she needed from the room and met Nick at the door. His smile could melt an iceberg. It turned her insides into mush. She smiled back and prayed she didn't make a complete fool of herself this evening. She slipped on her coat and took Nick's arm. She locked the door and arm in arm they walked wordlessly to the truck.

I melt every time you look at me that way
It never fails, anytime, any place
This burn in me is the coolest thing I've ever felt
I melt
