One More Day

Howie looked up at the sky. He couldn’t believe this was happening. His wife Hilary had died in a car accident. She was on her way home from work when a drunk driver swerved into the other lane. She drove the car into a ditch and she hit a tree on the way down causing her to hit her head and severely damaging it. The doctors said she didn’t have a chance. Howie knew there had to have been another way. But the doctors didn’t give her another chance. It soon started to rain.

He took her favorite rose, a white one, and set it down into the ground. She was going to be gone forever. How was he going to live without her being there? They were so happy together. She was the only thing in his life that MADE him want to live and be happy. What was he going to do with their little daughter Jennessa? She doesn’t have her mother anymore. Howie walked to his car and drove home. He left Jennessa to go to his parents’ house and stay. He knew it would probably be the BEST thing to do. He took off his coat and hat and set it on the coat rack near by. He saw Hilary’s white scarf hanging there. He picked it up and looked at it. He hung it back up. He was just going to leave it there.

Howie wanted to keep her alive as much as possible. He NEVER wanted to move on. He walked to the desk where the computer sat. And he saw a picture of him, Hilary, and Jennessa. He started to cry. That was only taken 3 weeks ago. So happy they were. He turned on the computer and went into the word document. Howie started to think of how he could express his feelings without making it look like a diary entry. He started to get an idea.

Last night I had a crazy dream
A wish was granted just for me
It could be for anything
I didn’t ask for money
Or a mansion in Malibu
I simply wished for
One more day with you

Howie’s emotion’s started to go haywire. He felt the tears rolling down his cheek. She didn’t even have to go into work that day. She wanted to go she could get caught up on some casework. She was a lawyer. And a good one too. Howie was so proud of her.

One more day
One more time
One more sunset maybe I’d be satisfied
But then again
I know what I would do
Leave me wishing still
For one more day with you

Howie leaned back in his chair. The long days when him and Hilary would sit out on the porch and watch the sun go down after they had put Jennessa down for the night. He just wished she was with them now.

First thing I’d do is pray
For time to crawl
I’d unplug the telephone
And keep the TV off
I’d hold you every second
Say a million I love you’s
That’s what I’d do
With one more day with you

Howie never got the chance to really say a proper goodbye. Howie didn’t even get the chance to say I love you. He just wanted to hold her one more time and kiss her and give her a hug and to hear her say she loves him.

One more day
One more time
One more sunset maybe I’d be satisfied
But then again
I know what I would do
Leave me wishing still
For one more day with you

He saved his document and closed the computer down. He walked down the hall and walked into once was their room that is now empty. He walked into the closet and got out his sweats and a tang top and changed out of his wet clothes. He didn’t want to think or do anything for the rest of the night, but just to think of Hilary. And what it would be like to spend one more day with her.

The End
