Chapter 7

"It's going to be cool, it's going to be cool ... I'm going to be cool! Yeah, I'm going to be cool!" Reina assured herself as she slowly got out of her limousine, as the driver helped her out to avoid disasters of falling. She felt her heart race in ways it had never had before. It was her first time attending a formal function.

"Are you going to be all right, mademoiselle?" the chauffeur asked, somewhat in shock of the sudden lack of conceitedness in his employer's attitude. "You see real wobbly!"

"That's because I am," Reina replied followed by a nervous chuckle. "Do I really have to go in there? I don't think my stomach is strong enough to go through this!" she whined, seeking some kind of consolement at her chauffeur. "David? Did you hear me? I'm asking you for advice here!" she let out another nervous laugh while placing both her hand on her stomach to ease the tension she felt circling around her stomach.

David looked bewildered that Reina was speaking to him in a manner one human being ought to speak to another, regardless of rank in the population standard of who's who and who has what. "You have showed grace and elegance tonight, Miss Reina, I am sure you will be just fine!" he smiled at her genuinely. "Now off you go, even Cinderella had her curfew! I will be waiting for you here at the stroke of midnight," David gave her one last smile as he allowed Reina to take the red carpet that led to the front door of the ballroom where the event was taking place. He stood by the limousine as he watched her take every step. "Mademoiselle?" he called out.

Reina quickly turned, in hopes that her chauffer had a change of heart and would drive her back home so that she can slip back into more comfortable clothing. "Yes?"

"You must hold your head up high, Miss Reina! Always be proud of who you are!" he nodded at her as he held his own head up high to show her what he meant.

Reina smiled at him as she did the same, following his advice. "Thanks, Dave!" she winked at him. In that moment, she felt a sudden rush of confidence emerge through her. She took one deep breath and continued her walk along the path that she never thought she would take her entire life.

Within a matter of seconds, Reina found herself entering a room filled with beautifully dressed people with noses held up high in the air, with snotty conversations filling the air. She roamed her eyes around carefully, looking for any person that might have been familiar to her as someone Hailey knew. There was no one.

A familiar feeling managed to run over her confidence as she felt the odd person out, once more. She wanted to run away and not bother looking back. "Not like it would matter. I'm always the invisible one," she thought to herself. She turned her body around to look for the bathroom: the sacred place where people can hide out from during a horrific time, but she was interrupted by a voice.

"Reina?"

Reina turned her body around to find Lee calling out to her. Surrounding her were a few unfamiliar people to her. Only two she recognized, Lee's boyfriend, Howie Dorough, by her side. And Nick Carter, the man that seemed to make her legs feel more like jello above anything else. "Come here and mingle with us!" Lee retorted

Reina took another deep breath as she headed towards them.

"Hi Rei, no date tonight?" Howie greeted her as he leaned over to give her a cheek-to-cheek greeting.

"Stag is the way to go!" she retorted in a manner unfamiliar to them. She let out a small laugh as the rest of the people around her gave her a strange look. No one laughed, except one: Nick. "Right," she sighed under breath while bopping her head. "Embarassment: 1, Reina: 0!"

The conversation continued where Reina realized it was nothing but sheer gossip of who is with whom at the party. Reina looked around the circle and saw the bewilderment of excitement filling the eyes of the people involved in the conversation.

"I'm going to get a drink!" Nick retorted out as he rolled his eyes back, and without excusing himself out of the conversation, he walked off as he scratched the back of his head: a sheer sign of boredom. Reina followed him with her eyes, to see where he was headed. She was curious whether he was there with someone else and it killed her not knowing.

"He came alone," Lee whispered in her ears with a sly smile drawn across her face.

"What?" Reina looked, confused.

"Nick. I can tell you're curious if he's here with someone or not. He came alone!" Lee informed her as she gave her a small wink then turned her head back around to continue with the gossip talk with her friends.

Reina couldn't help but feel somewhat relieved.
